How Do You Use Your iPad?

Read some detailed reviews today and came away convinced the iPad pro is what makes the most practical sense to me. But that price! OUCH!

This will be a minority opinion but i strongly dislike the iPad / tablets in general. Had the opportunity to use one for a few weeks and was happy to give it back. I have an 11" MacBook Air which is like an iPad with a keyboard. But it's a real computer. Yes, I've seen the iPads with the add on keyboards. Never made much sense to me.

After everyone told me that I would love a tablet if I use on, I bought an iPad 2 or 3 years ago. Biggest waste of money in recent years. I'm a good 10 finger typer which does not work on that virtual keyboard. Sometimes links on a webpage are so small that it's almost impossible to hit the right link with a finger. Sold it again.

After my old Macbook Pro was too old I now have a Microsoft Surface Book, the thing with the wow factor. I can detach the display, take it to a meeting, make some instant sketches and notes and back in the office use it as a real working tool again.

For me a real keyboard and a good trackpad is far better than a fingerpointing device.

Before i bought one, I didn't think I could justify it. Didn't know what I'd use it for. Now that I have it, I pretty much never leave a room without it. But I don't use it for 'photography' other than reading this forum, viewing Flickr and Ȯggl and general web surfing.

• like a portable tv or PIP tv screen, so I can have two games/shows running, via the time warner app. + its tv listings
• YouTube - lots of guitar gear reviews
• way, way, way, way too much spider solitaire
• pinterest
• Wunderlist
• Evernote
• MLB at Bat: Every Red Sox game
• WatchESPN for Syracuse basketball games
• GarageBand/Amplitube/JamUp for guitar practice

My MacBook Pro stopped working a year ago and I haven't even bothered to replace it. I use a full iMac for work and the iPad replaces what I used to use the laptop for at home.

Sketches

Sketches

I've had three iPads, my latest (and probably last) is an air 2.
I uses it for sketching music in Garage Band, with an 64 Gig Olala iDisc jump drive, I use it for movies for travel.

Mine is set up so that it links to Photoshop on my desktop and I sketch on the ipad so that I have WAY more control and space than the new Pro model. A Pencil 53 and the right apps are what you need, so save your money! The configuration kills a Microsoft Surface for Photoshop and art work. What you see on the iPad is also created on the desktop simultaneously.

By itself, it is no way a substitute for a desktop or laptop Mac, but for travel, or cellular it is very good indeed.
