I have a lot of trouble handholding below 1/30 in a lot of situations, so I'm pretty thankful for fast lenses.
The COntax lenses look smaller when collapsed because the mount is in the Camera. LTM lenses faster than the F3.5 Elmar tend to have large focus mounts. The Canon 50/1.5 is just compact, smaller than the 50/1.8 Serenar. On the Leica CL, it fits into the pouch case. On a Leica IIIf, it does not block the viewfinder "at all".

I have 50/1.4 in Contax/Yashica, Canon EF and Leica M mounts. My preferred lenses, however, are much slower. For RF walkabout, the choice is Summaron 35/2.8, Elmar 50/2.8, Elmar 90/4. In low light, I improvise with braced shooting, or the nuclear option (flash). In some ways, my best low-light kit is the Nikon D300: AF @ EV 0, 3200 ASA, inbuilt flash, 17-55/2.8 Überzoom . Who needs subtlety?
