My Pentax K10D arrived today.
Yesterday, the 50/1.4 Super Takumar arrived.
Now I'm sitting here waiting for the M42-K adaptor to arrive. So I have a camera and a lens - but cannot use them.
It's like getting a new car - without keys.

I think I can relate! I have had a near new Olympus E-510 body (since Monday), 26+ OM Zuiko lenses and am waiting for my OM to 4/3rds adapter. Playing with the menu on the body and charging the battery just does not cut it! :bang:

Frankly, I can't understand your frustration over a Pentax when you have a
"M8 and an ever changing
assortment of lenses."..
Heh. The M8 needs a friend to play with. A larger, bulkier, heavier friend.

You could tape black card in front of the lens mount and make a pin-hole in it.

Payasam has a verrrrry good idea there - this could be the opportunity to try the pinhole pictures that you have always wanted to do, but never did because you had other sorts of pictures (through glass) to make . . . ??

That's almost funny enough to try.

Tim,
What brand of adapter are you getting? I had issues with an old Kalt adapter that worked fine on my ME Super, but not on the K10D. It continues to turn in the bayonet mount and you can end up with a lens on your lap or worse. The Pentax brand adapter works perfectly. I also aquired a Bower adapter that I haven't tried yet.
Your in for a lot of fun. I love using my old 50 1.4 on the K10D . ..... Oh I'm sorry, I didn't mean to add to your frustrations.

That's got to be really frustrating, Tim. And while I don't mean to add to your frustration, I can tell you that you're in for some real fun when you do get that adaptor. I recently picked up a Pentax K100D Super (from another rff member, no less) and have been having a ball using all my old Pentax screwmount lenses with it. Also picked up the Pentax DA 40/2.8 pancake lens in an attempt to make the rig as physically small as possible while retaining all the auto capabilities. Very fun stuff.

Yeah, rub it in.
I did go with the pentax-brand adaptor. I read too many negative comments about the off-brand adaptors and figured I'd just spend a few extra bucks to get the one that seems to be the most trouble free.
The ability to use the old screw-mount lenses was the reason for my decision to get the K10D. I may one day get a modern lens to go with it, but maybe not. I love using older lenses from the 1970s and 1980s on my M8. So this lets me stick with roughly the same period glass on the SLR.

Hey, Tim, one "tip" regarding the Pentax brand adaptor. Unlike a Leica ltm adaptor, which comes off the camera still attached to the lens, you cannot remove a screwmount lens with the adaptor still on it (unless you modify the adaptor, that is). So, what you end up doing is unscrewing the lens and then either screwing in another lens or wanting to remove the adaptor in order to put on a K mount lens. Removing the adaptor is no big deal once you know the trick. Nothing magic about it, but here's the deal. You reach towards the open-faced camera lens mount using your index finger and opposing thumb (like you're going to squeeze a cherry tomato) with the fingernail of your index finger reaching between the mount and the adaptor to squeeze or release the small flat lever which locked the adaptor onto the mount. Then, while pressing the lens mount release button on the front of the camera and while using your fingernail to collapse or release the lever, you press lightly against the camera mount with the tips of your thumb and index finger and rotate the adaptor counterclockwise about a quarter turn. The adaptor should then be lifted right out of the camera. Sorry if this sounds overly complicated. It's really very quick and easy. It just takes a few extra words to make it all clear (at least I hope I made it all clear!). Have fun and enjoy the camera!

I actually enjoy reverse mounting my lenses and use them as macro, using my body as the focussing mechanism. Talking about hit and miss, lots of misses but at least you will have fun exploring ... might get you going while you wait. Here is one of my attempts http://flickr.com/photos/mnmleung/2082555169/in/set-72157600151060000/
