That is a profound question that our philosophy teacher tried to drill into our heads when speaking about Parmenides.
The universe would be very simple if nothing at all existed. By introducing just a single subatomic particle, all sorts of complexity then arises.
So why is it that anything exists? My answer is that things exist because total non-existence is impossible...and that is the true miracle of the universe.
