How many B&W emulsions do you use for personal work?

Just the one as I like to be consistent. HP5+ @ ei200 developed in HC-110 dilution H

HP5 (400/800/1600/3200) covers nearly all my bases.

I rotate in different 100 speed emulsions, currently it's Tmax 100.

medium: Arista Legacy Pro 400 or Neopan 400
(both from the deep freeze, long may they last)

120: slow: APX100 (dwindling stock)
medium: Tri-X

I keep coming back to Tri-X. I also still use Fomapan 200. If Plus X was still being made, that would be my second emulsion.

Also, if HIE were still made, that would be my third emulsion 🙂

I use three for greater than 90% of my work

Tri-X for 35/120 at box speed and pushed
Hp5+ in 120 since I still have some left and a really nice development regime and tonality
Acros in 35/120

Using Diafine for tri-x and acros, using my remaining ilfosol 3 on ho5+

Please post and let us know why. Do you use one fast and one slow film? Different films for different styles/projects/formats?

What's the advantage of LQN as opposed to XTOL with Fomapan 400?

Tri-X has been my go to film. Tried T-MAX 100 and 400, of the two 100 is better.

Now onto Fomapan 200 and 400.

The advantage of LQN over XTOL is that I can easily and reliably get it from the same place I buy my film from 🙂. I'd just as likely use XTOL or anything else really, but LQN is the easiest for me at present. I get my times from the Fomapan 400 data sheet; 7 min at EI 250 at 20 deg.

I'd use Tri-X just as well, but it cost 3x the price of Fomapan here, I wasn't a fan of the T-Max flims, a bit too digital for me.

FP4 all day every day, occasionally HP5 pushed to 800 ASA in low-light conditions.

Fuji Neopan 400.. for almost all my 135 bw works
a bit worry about discontinuation .. but manage to keep +/- 150 rolls in my freezer for future use

Rollei RPX 400 .. esp for almost everything in 120

FP4 125 ... for special purpose ... or sometimes acros 100

I give up Kodak already
since they screw me 3 times big times in an important project.. both Tmax and TriX


and the developer : 80-90 percent is Rodinal... the rest : Microphen or Perceptol
