How many cameras do you take on a long trip?

Have 2 MP bodies that travel with me all the time along with a IIf w/50 mm collapsable Summicron. I also have the arsenal of lens that stay in a Pelican Case in the hotel. Luckily I have to stay in better hotels because of the high computer equipment we carry with us as well. I also keep a digilux 2 around for quick shots but do not always carry it out in town.

A long flying vacation i only take the fuji, its nice, no other lens, (its heavy enough as it is) and i bring the spotmeter, and alot of film. If im driving somewhere then ill drag around the view camera stuff with it.

For interesting locations I take 2-4 cameras, with 1-2 of these cameras being very small and light, such as the Minox GT or Olympus XA.

I allways promised myself a "travel light" trip for the next, but I never succeded.
Then what I try to do is to bring any 35 mm SLR, one WA two teles , a 2x converter, plus one or two RF in my backpack.
My usual choice is:
Fujica ST801 / MIranda Sensomat with 24 / 135 / 200 and 350 mm lenses and 2x converter.
Yashica Electro 35 GS(T)N and/or
Canonet QL17/Mamiya SD 1.5 / Contax II / Kiev 4
Handheld meter (Gossen Lunasix III).

If I have to reduce weight to a minimum, the I´ll bring just an RF or two, preferably not battery dependant.

usually 2 cameras: one 35mm and another Medium format one. If the trip is really really really important I would definitely take the third one, SLR for example!

One camera, 2 lenses.

I shoot with a compact medium format rangefinder (see avatar), so I don't need more than one camera since it is small like a 35mm, but produces great big negs. Quiet, fast, etc.

I never use the 65mm, so if I go anywhere with this camera, it will be with the 45 and the 100.

I don't like hauling around great piles of gear when I travel - and having always been a medium format guy, carrying around more than one camera has been a BIG deal.

i think i would take the zi and the cl.
both m mount, each has a meter built in so i would have one les thing to carry.

25 & 50 zm lenses for zi and 40 for the cl.

but who knows?

For any kind of trip not involving family gatherings:

1. M7 or ZI or Konica RF with 25, 50, 75, 90 and maybe 135;
2. Mamiya 7 with 80 and 150 (don't have the 65 yet); and,
3. Nikon FM3a or F3 with LensBaby, macro and long lenses (i.e. stuff that RF's can't really do except with a Visoflex -- which I'm not prepared to get into).

All this stuff, except for the film, is put in 2 camera bags which in turn are put in a big piece of luggage (big enough for tripod) along with clothing to act as padding. Half the clothes are just to protect the cameras/lenses and fill out the luggage. A robe here, a jacket there...you know. Film is taken on-board after protracted argument and struggle with security and a nice chat with the supervisor who is called back from his coffee and donut break.

At least two bodies. Next summer it'll be the R-D1, the ZI or Bessa R, and the CL. For lenses I'll bring the Carl Zeiss 50/2, the J-8 50/2, the J-9 85/2, the CV 25/4 and the M-Rokkor 40/2. If I can get it before I leave, I'd like to bring the CV 15/4 as well, but I ned to buy it first. 🙂

I've done single camera trips in the past, but I've been burned by this single point of failure scenario. So, it's one main (Bessa-T w. 50/2 M-Hexanon), one backup (Minox35).

Last trip I did in Andalusia was with an Iskra 1 and a contax Aria with 85 mm and 45 mm lenses.
For some trip I ad a camera Canon XM2, all this goes in the same bag. I take a smaller bag when I leave the WM2 at the hostal..

Xpan with 45 & 90mm
Mamiya 6 with 50mm
Jobo 30GB battery operated Hard disk
Remarks:
Xpan 90mm only used for 2 shots.
It is difficult to decide which one (Xpan/M6) to leave home

I'm off to Italy shortly and am wondering what to take, especially as I am under orders not to take 'a load of useless old cameras'

Probably it will be a Nikon coolpix 4500 digital which is a fairly competent camera and a Ricoh GR1

I think the dSLR and Yashica GSN will stay at home.

I'm going to pyrenees for three weeks this summer and I'm taking only Hexar RF and 50+28mm lenses. I was planning to take my MF instead (6x6 Bronica + 50/180 lenses + tripod, two backs etc.), but I would probably thow it from some cliff after few days 🙂

My mom also travels a lot and she uses two bodies (OM1, OM2) and 24/50/135mm lenses.

I'm just back from a three-week driving trip around Tasmania. I took:

Leica M4 with 35/50/90 lenses for B&W
Yashica 124G for variety (only shot one roll of B&W)
Pentax DSLR for colour, with a bag of old manual prime lenses and a pair of modern zooms


I also took a backup for colour work - an Olympus OM2 with a bag of lenses. I ended up lending this to a friend we were travelling with; her digital P&S was appropriated by her 9-year old and she was lamenting the loss of her OM10 which had failed some years ago. She was overjoyed to be using a proper film camera again, and claimed to particularly enjoy the discipline of working with a single prime lense.
