On a recent trip to India a take two cameras a Yashica gt for color and Westex mf for BW.I developt the colorfilm at location in minilab god quality!great price and fun to see the pics.
 
How many cameras do you take on a long trip?

Never that much stuff ever again! I recently took these cameras/lenses on a trip home to Australia...

Nicca IIIS with - 35/2.5, 50/3.5, 50/2, 90/4, 135/3.5
Bessa L (Cosina SW-107) with - 15/4.5
Rollei B35
Rollei dt4000 (digital p&s... sorry!)

I actually used (in order of most used) -

Rollei dt4000
Bessa L with 15/4.5
Nicca IIIS with 50/2 & 35/2.5
Rollei B35

I also bought myself a manual SLR kit while I was away, which got a good amount of use, but I had to haul it back to the US with everything else! Next time I'm taking 2 cameras & maybe four focal lengths MAX... Too many choices completely stifled my photography & I just didn't use some of the stuff I was lugging around. Live & learn I guess...

Three.

Two M bodies, three lenses. The 35/2 and 50/2 (or 1.4) on the bodies, plus 90/2.8

One 28mm P&S. Had been the GR1, next trip it will be the GRD.

Folks, when I ask camera or camera bodies I count all of them as long as they are capable of taking pictures, so your daughters digicam counts.

I used to take a lot of stuff. Something like: Two Nikon bodies with 28mm, 50mm 55mm macro, 135mm, One RF with two or three lenses, 6x6 with two lenses and a speed graphic with changing bag, film holders, tripodes, small and large strobe... Now I got bored of this and I usually go out with my Nikon F with 50mm and 28mm and the Conika Hexar or Leica CL or Leica III with one lens, sometimes I use a Olympus OM2 instead of the F to be able to carry around more lenses. For a while I used to leave the Nikon home to have the space for a home-made 4x5 pinhole camera. Unfortunately, recently the camera got lost thanks to Iberia and I am waiting to complete a new camera to start the bad habit again (now I am going 8x10" eh eh!).

Two always:

1. Bessa R2a + 3 lenses
2. Yashica GT (will now be replaced by Olympus Stylus for size reasons - thanks Gene!)

I can get the Bessa, 3 lenses, film, filters and Stylus in my Crumpler bag (or "murse" as my fiancee calls it).
 
At minimum...

At minimum...

1 camera... usually a Point & Shoot. Because wherever I'm going... that is - at minimum - what I shall require.


But if I have painstakingly planned a trip, I would likely take 2 (20D/EOS), maybe 3... the Point & Shoot included.

I said "4", on the basis that a long trip is more than a week or two but less than 3 months (which I'd call "temporary relocation"). For this duration of trip I'd take my two dSLR bodies, lenses, my pocket digicam and, now, my Hexar RF. For a short trip (days to a few weeks) I'd probably make that only 3 cameras by leaving out one of the dSLRs (which I might or might not have taken previously) but now always take the RF along.

Exactly... Like Glenn said though, it's aparently to make sure others don't know your camera is a $$$+ Leica (like >50% of people know they exist anyway!)... I have seen one guy with his M6 taped up and it looked kinda stupid to be honest (imho... sorry!) I guess (maybe?) some think that the 'red dot' alerts potential subjects of the stealth/covert photographer's intentions, but I'm yet to be convinced...

Completely depends on the where and the why. Never fewer than two - typically three. Typically two Canon DSLRs plus a medium format (have trekked for a month with two SLRs+645) and an M6 if it's a more journalism oriented thing. If it's going to be more scenic, I'll bring a rangfinder or two plus the RZ67 kit. Personal enjoyment, M6 and Rolleiflex.

I'm currently in a transitional period, gearwise. I'm selling my Contax 645 system, maybe paring down my Canon DLSR system to items I use strictly for news/event journalism and basic studio work, and debating whether or not to lose the RZ system in favor of 4x5, though it's unlikely. I shoot film for personal work and any client who's fine with it. I'd imagine by this time next year I'll be using the RZ, M6+M8, the Canons, and Rolleiflex, with the Canons being the "client scheduled work" cameras and the Ms being the "my schedule project" cameras. I'm definitely still a 120/220 devotee, and will continue to take those with me for all personal and long-term client work.
 
RF of choice.
SLR/DSLR depending on my mood.
and if its a loing trip I used to tke me recently deceased SX-70 Polaroid.

FWIW I'd be careful 'black taping' a Leica. I personally have done this and it ripped the baked finish off the plate on the back of an M4P. This seriously affects resale value.
 
I usually take 2. Vacations - Canon EOS 30D and Canon Elan 7N film camera (for slides). For business travel just 1 camera - either a Bessa or a Contax T3 or a Oly XA. Camping - one of the Bessas (R2 or T) and the Canon gear and sometimes a TLR. My better half brings a Oly Stylus Epic.
 
I voted 2 bodies, but thats my standard response. I think it depends on the destination and what I'm looking to shoot. When I went up north to San Fran last year I took 4 bodies, my canon 1n and A2e, Pentax 645, and my Pentax K1000(when I hade it). Went to London for 10 days and took just the 645 and the K1000. When I go back SF in Jan, I am taking my Broni RF, my Bessa R2A, and the Pen 645.
And I am already planning my trip to france for two weeks next year......thinking Broni, R2A, and R4M(if I end up getting one)

thank god you didn't ask how many rolls of film..........
 
Last trip which was a little over 3 months to central america I took two cameras
M2 + 15mm + 50mm + 90mm

I hardly used the M2. The epic suits my traveling style more. I'm usually more concerned with the trip/experience than photographs. That said I wish I took MORE!

I realized that digital is great for these long trips, you get inspired to take more photos when you can chimp, or view the photos at a internet cafe, or post updates on flickr...When I'm around home this isn't a problem...I can just go home and soup/scan.....Traveling is really a whole different ball game for me..

My main problem with digital (in the compact variety) is the lack of low light ability...I found most of my travel stuff was in good light...This is the opposite of what happens around home...So digital isn't much of a problem here.

So the sum is, while around home film and a M2 suits me great(I often head out for weekend/day trips withe the m2 +50mm +15mm) Traveling requires a different set of gear...


So now I'm looking for a digital for my next trip...Which I think would be :

Digital + Hexar AF



if only I could get a APS sized sensor hexar AF........
