How many D700 owners .... are thinking of upgrading to the D800?

I have no plans currently ... but I am curious as to how many owners of the exceptionally fine D700 are thinking of upgrading to the D800.

And for what reasons?

Most of the output from my D700 finishes up web based and what does get printed is usually used for smaller publications ... so no real need for more megapixels ... and the video capability doesn't really ring my bells!

Possibly, but let's see. For me the main reasons would be 100% finder, occasional use of video and the increased resolution which might become useful with my landscapes. But really I'm in no rush with it.

edit: one clear added benefit w/ the higher Mpix would obviously be having more freedom to crop. Not that I ever would crop my pics.... 😉:angel:

Hi Keith. I still have a bit of life left in my D700.
I bought my 700 as soon as it was launched so it's a few years old, the price soon went down. I think I'll wait a while with the 800, and I wouldn't get it without looking at it and so on. On paper it suits my needs, I like the idea of getting the most out of some of the new lenses like my 50 f1.4 and underated 60 macro. I suppose the sacrifice is low light performance maybe isn't as good as the D4, but I can't afford that!
To me it looks like a fantastic upgrade, especially video which I'd love to have a go at. I'm talking myself into it... anyone want a used D700?

Well, if a D800 fell into my lap for a bargain price I'd be sorely tempted. But the truth is I probably use less than 10% of my D700's capability and have no idea what I'd use the D800's extra capability for...

I'm still trying to decide if I need to trade up to the D700 from my D200. 😀
It's a decision of, "when is enough, enough?" 🙄

Never say never, but at the moment I have no plans to trade off my D700 for a D800. The simple reasoning is that I post on the web and print occasionally to 11x17 max for home use. The D700 does this for me with sufficient quality. I may just wait for the D900 or later and use up the life that is left in the D700.

im going the other way Keith, sold my D700 this week, keeping the D7000 just for the sake of it......BUT picking up the black X100 tomorrow 🙂.......and the OM-D when it arrives......heading down the smaller/lighter path.

I'm a former D700 owner. It was just great in all respects except, like Keith, most of my output went to the web or occassional prints of modest size. Now, I use a D7000, which weighs less and still has more resolution than I probably need. In fact, now that I have a Fuji X100 it's led me to considering replacing the D7000 with an X-Pro 1. Unlike a pure rangefinder, the new Fuji will even be able to use zooms and telephotos.

So no, I won't consider the D800 (although it sure looks good).

I've looked through the D800's brochure and technical specs book at my local camera store. It's not really the camera for me, as it does seem to be geared to challenge the resolution from digital medium format and 'tripod' type photography (architecture, product, fashion). Not to mention the extra computer power and storage to manage all the files.

But I'll keep my eye on it...

Amen... not only that, but factoring in the cost of a new computer is not feasible for me even if I found a D800 myself. The files are just too large.

When you have mastered your current camera(s). It is obvious that I will die before I master the M3 or the the IIIF, let alone a D800.

Yup, already on a list for the D800e. The D700 will be my backup, and I'll sell my D200.

Similar boat, here. Although it's a fine camera, I only got a D700 because of its high ISO performance & find it to be a PITA to use after years of RFs, so I'm also interested in seeing if I can replace it w/the X-Pro 1.

No upgrade for me.

I replace work tools like computers and camera bodies every three years. So I don't have to think about the D800 for 18 months.

If I had to replace one or bth of my D700s tomorrow, I'd get another D700.
When I switched to the D700 from the D300 used I missed the 100% finder at first. But now I just use LiveView since the camera is on a tripod.

I am as curious as the next curious person but I will sit this one out. I don't think I have the energy to face more batteries and chargers at the moment. The D700/D300 combination with shared power and MB-D10 is working very well for me. But the next one will no doubt be irresistible.

Definitely interested. I want to wait a good few months though for a price drop and to read some reviews from actual use. From a video point of view its a godsend for me, higher resolution would be nice for stills but every time I shoot my D700 it still amazes me with its image quality...

No, Don't need the extra resolution, am satisfied with the current high ISO performance, and don't need the video.

More likely to get back into a D700 if I saw a nice one for $1500ish. The D700+50/1.4G is a very capable combo.
