No santa fe here:

I've heard of cities where trends start like grunge in seattle, busking in sf, indie folk in nebraska, but have not made the connection between artfulness (tm) and santa fe.
It is cool that Santa Fe, is less than 90 miles away ... from Albuquerque...

Why not? My belief is based on many years experience as a professional artist in both the midwest and in Santa Fe, a place with more artists than anywhere in the USA except New York and Los Angeles. I have known literally thousands of women who were artists or art students and few are photographers compared to the number of men. In recent years I have seen, here in Indiana, an greatly increasing number of women getting into wedding and portrait photography. They're still outnumbered by men in that field too but I do think eventually that may change in that one field of professional photography.
I know you are an art professor, and you're probably basing your disagreement with me on the enrollment you see in the college where you teach. I wonder, though, how many of your female students will end up as professional photographers of some sort or another and how many will move on to other careers after they graduate. Very few of my classmates of either sex stuck with photography long after they left school; it is too hard to make a living and most people don't have the dedication it takes to endure that struggle. Three of my classmates stuck with photography. Two of us are men, one a woman. If I remember right, there was about an equal number of men and women in my classes, but as I noted more men than women stuck with it. That's a small sample size based on the people I went to school with; you know more photo students than I do. How many of the men and how many of the women actually stick to it.
The women I went to school with who majored in painting, sculpture, graphic design, and printmaking have stayed with it to a much greater degree than the photo women did. I don't know why that is though. Most of these women do not earn a living from it. In fact, I cannot think of any that do. They're married and living off their husbands, which makes staying with art as a hobby or as a profession one hopes to make money at, easier. Those who majored in photo could do that too, but have not. Like I said, I don't know why.

OK.. Ladies I need some help.
My GF likes my M3 but she said she would like her own but with a built in meter. Her teenage daughter has pinched the digital I bought her.
I was thinking pre TTL M6 with a a Summicron 35mm as her primary lens... It would be surprise present.
Suggestions/advice please ladies.

i think that is just so stunning of you -- truly!
melts my heart and, i think, if someone gifted me with such, i would probably cry (and very little makes me so outwardly emotional -- but a gift of a Leica body and lens would do so!)...
as to which one, i'll let some of those more knowledgeable answer. i have an M2 which i dearly love (and have always lusted after the M3 for the larger finder), but i truly suck at metering unless it is low light.
i haven't gone any further in getting a film body with metering after being shell-shocked by the price of a Jahre M7 i fell for... i know there are a lot of other options, but i ended up spending too much money on glass and so i didn't pursue it...
i'm sure the other gals (and guys) here can advise you -- but i just wanted to tell you how truly wonderful i think your surprise gift will be
cheers!

Well I've never had someone spend that much money on me before.
Me I'd just go for an M2 and MR4 meter, and a half decent 50mm lens. My beater 50mm Canon Serenar f/1.8 is a cracker even though it looks like it got into a fight in a sandpaper factory.

BTW, both of my film Leicas are meterless. Still, that said, I'd love an M6. I think. I mean, honestly, I think my eye is better than a meter most of the time and my negs seem to concur. Pix? Of course!

Hi Maggie
Hi Maggie
Great photos! I think that if you have the gift of being able to meter without a meter you should keep that up. When I had M4Ps and other manual cameras, I'd generally lose a couple of of frames/roll due to missed metering, though some could be saved or viewed, there were always a few non optimal.
I think being able to meter without a meter is like having perfect pitch. Some people have it, and others like me, have neither.
Looks like a nice bedside guitar, I have a no name nylon string guitar for noodling with, but sometimes bring an electric in to spice things up! I have a blackface champ as well, but it's turned around so the cats don't scratch the grille cloth.

Thanks, Ted! I don't think my eyes always had perfect pitch, but sort of like my ears, they're gotten a little bit closer every year. Practice may not make perfect, but it does make you better, mostly.

That's nice!
What kind of pickups? any other mods?
I like how the only inlays are off to the side, looks really clean.
My main electric lately has been a black China made yamaha rgx-a2, mainly because it's light, and stays in tune, and I don't mind if it gets knocked around a bit.

Those are some Gibson P-90s and the bar bridge replaced a tune-o-matic. Otherwise, it's a stock, made-in-Korea, Electromatic.
That's the best kind of guitar to have! A real player!

Maggieo- Affordable leicas... Not that much money is unfortunately alot for me. I know if I save up I can usually get what I am looking for, but then if I have a pot of money the cat gets sick or something breaks... How do you like the M-4? I have read disparaging things about it on the forum as if it is not up to snuff. However on cameraquest Gandy praises the m4 cameras for saving Leica's butt but also being the last extremely well made ones for a long time.

I absolutely love my M4-P. It is my favorite camera to use, ever. It's every bit as fine as my M2 or my M8.

There are three different cameras with the M4 designation. The original M4 is the last of the totally handbuilt cameras. The M4-2 is the one S. Gandy says saved Leica. It came out after the M5 was dropped in the face of horrible sales. The M4-2 was designed to be produced cheaply because Leica was in financial trouble. Both the M4 and M4-2 have 35, 50, 90, and 135mm framelines. The M4-2 does not have a self-timer, the original M4 does. The M4-P came after the M4-2 and improved on it, fixing the problems the M4-2 had and adding a different frame set: 28, 35, 50, 75, 90, and 135mm. Again, no self-timer. The M4-P is said to be as well made as the later M6, which is just an M4-P with a built in meter. I have two M6 bodies and they're very nice. I actually prefer them to the old original M4, which I used to have. The old ones are, well...old. Most of them have problems in my experience. The M6 is the best Leica to get if money is an issue because the older ones WILL cost you a lot to get fixed up right and they will need it. M6 is new enough to be reliable, old enough to be cheap, has a meter.

What's not to like about an M4? Best of the Ms, I would think.

I think she got confused between the M4 and the M4-2 (which has a bad rep.). Personally, having had and poured money into a couple of M4 bodies to get them working right, and having seen a lot of others that needed service (actually never seen an M2 or M4 that worked right that was for sale, save the two I sold after getting them worked on), I can say they're simply too old.
