Locally, I like to carry more equipment than actually is needed [because it is "locally"]. When traveling overseas, I like to pick one lens that I really want to try out very well so it does not just sit there on some shelf. Then I make sure there is one fast aperture lens in the mix.

I usually bring normal (50) and a wide the 21 or 28, it depends on the mood or on the subject/place I'm going to shoot. I've seen that three lenses or more, for me, makes things more complicated.

for a change: 105/2.5 on the F3, but just to overcome the 35mm point of view...
if RF then the 50/2 Carl Zeiss Jena T - unbeatable. and feels like a slight tele.

The 35/1.7 Ultron pretty much lives on my Bessa R. But I am increasingly fond of the 25/4, seems to be a great all around lens since I shoot inside w/flash a lot. so, usually 2 at most 3, with the 3rd being maybe the 75 mm.

I'm debating whether I should vote 2 or 3.
I'll vote 2 as that's my compact, light-packing choice:
Bessa R w/ CV 28/3.5 and Summitar 50/2

Voted "a bunch" I understand that is more than "several". I keep my Rangefinders ( Leicas) in one bag containing 4 bodies and 7ish lenses. My ULF & LF stuff all goes as a unit, based on format. 4x5 + all lenses, 5x7 + all lenses, 8x10 & 8x20, same... 11 or 12 lenses with overlap, depending on format 65mm-600mm. Yes, there is a Nikon F,F2 Bag but we wont talk about that.... Bill

I usually bring two: 21/35 if I'm using my R4M or 35/50 if I'm using my M2. I also have my Rollei 35 with me when going out so does that make it three?

If UPS delivers on schedule, and I expect they will, I'll go off to New Mexico in a couple of days with a bunch of Ektar, an M3, a Summicron 50/2 collapsible and an Elmar 90/4 collapsible. I have more modern and more practical alternative available to me, but there you go.
I'll be traveling by air, where convenience, size and weight are critical. If I'm driving, I'll haul around lots of stuff. If it's uncomfortable to carry all day, it stays home.

Usually one, 35mm.
If I take 2, it's 50mm and 35mm.

I'm extremely hard on myself... my typical "take with me to work" bag that I walk around at lunch with usually has:
- Yashica 124g
- Pen F w/38mm f1.8 & 100ISO film
- Olympus XA & 400ISO film
- Canon SLR Mount: 14mm, 30mm, 85mm
- either my EOS 50D or Elan7 depending on my mood
- and I'll top it off with one of my Lomo's: Pop9, SuperSampler, ActionSampler
As you can see...I hate myself... I'm trying to blow my back out by 40 and am in desperate need of a pack mule or mini-me to lug my stuff around. Why, you ask, do I carry all this stuff with me... besides the reasons I've given, I work next to a large outdoor market and I never know what I'll see or what I feel like shooting with. Plus... I find it's great training for when I'm on the job. When I go to a shoot with only what I need for that job my pack feels positively light as a feather

My smallest travelling case includes (also for cycling or horseback riding):
Bessa R
35 or 50mm mounted (mostly UC-Hexanon 35/2 and a small 50, i.e. Canon 50/1.5)
50 or 35mm in bag together with 21/4 CV or 25/3.5 Canon
small telephoto (mostly 100/3.5 Canon)
sometimes 15/4.5 CV as well
one or two viewfinders
one extra film (the rest in home/hotel base)
no filters, but lenses capped
usually no hoods, except for the 100mm. When with 4 lenses only, hood for the 50/1.4 or UC-Hexanon
packed in a very small LOWE case (1 1/2 liters?), when cycling in front of my bars, otherwise carried with a shoulder strap.
it's very dense and lightweight (1kg)
a PEN-F combo can compete with the size and weight, but offers no SW. A M mount cannot (lenses too big, expecially capped)
Taking a camera with a 35mm or 50mm lens in a jacket or around the neck and the other lens in the trousers don't counts for me here, but very often this is a case for the day... In this case it's often one of my more heavier cameras...
