How Many Photos From a 36 Roll?

I have had as many as 50...too bad the film never engaged in the take up spool. But when it does engage, typically 36-37 shots. Ironically, some of the best shots occur in the last frame.

My only Bessa is the Bessa R. I don't want to ram it to the end of the spool, so I stop
at 34 or 35. In fact, I do this with most of my film cameras. The Leica M2's winding mechanism is sturdy enough, to pull the film right out of the little canister.

For the first time ever I got thirty nine frames the other day in my M3 ... I normally get thirty eight!

This is all irrelevant of course because I can get a bucket load of raw DNG's from the 1 gig SD card in my M8! 😛

Half frames are cheating, Chris 🙂 . I voted 38 but the truth is I often only shoot about 30 and want to change film because the sun's gone down or something.

I could easily get 37, but the sheets I file negs in only hold 35, so I try for that by cranking off four at the start instead of five. If money were no object, I'd go to 24 exp rolls!

I wind on twice initially and can get 37 shots but I stop it at 36 because if I shoot 37 it wont fit into my film holders.

On my R2 I almost always get 39 😀 . I insert the film take-up spool-end first, then close the back. I wind on, checking that the rewind crank is turning, and shoot one picture with lenscap, setting minimum aperture (f/22) maximum shutterspeed (1/2000), then start using the film as normal. So I get negatives number 00, 0, 1 and then up to 37. Oddly, because I almost never trust the very first negative, I'll often shoot 00 and 0 as the same picture - so why do I do it? 😕

Incidentally, when I use my FM2n that doesn't work: I get 38 but cannot wind on for the next shot.

When I do manual film processing (B/W indeed), I do not use 1st two, and last one frames (or shoot something unimportant). Becouse when drying a film, I need some space in the end to hang it on the clips safely

When I shoot to the end of a roll (Leica M7) I usually get 37, with 38 about 10% of the time, very rarely 39. I guess it depends somewhat on how you load the film and the brand(s) you use.

The trick is to get the extra shots at the beginning of the film not at the end!!
Load the film on to the take up spool, remember to take up the slack so that you can observe the rewind knob turning as you advance the film, advance only the number of frames required to transport the fogged film leader.This should get you an extra couple of frames.

Exactly.
Kodak is shorter than Fuji in their film, at least one exposure.
Foma is also not too bad in their lenght. Rollei is exactly the right amount. But indeed it depends how you load.

I rewind at about frame 30 or so and load a fresh roll. I use Print File pages that only hold 35 frames so there's no point in trying to get a few extra shots per roll. I could easily get 38-39 shots with the Leicas.

36 is great, but sometimes never enough. My counter goes to 40. Anybody selling 40 frame rolls? Or is that just for folks who bulk-wind their own?

FWIW, I've just used and developed my first roll of Foma 400 and got 41 exposures. Wasn't trying, just kept shooting until I couldn't any more.
