How much are Nikon F90xs going for nowadays?

Dear all

as some of you might remember, I for the most stopped using my Nikon FM and D100 in favor of Leica M (MPs and an M8) several years ago.

This has been good for me. Anyway the FM was starting to give me trouble and the D100 too. But of course having an SLR around is always useful, if it's good working order...

Now a friend has offered to give me a F90x, if I just give her "some" money for it. What's a fair deal for such a camera in good shape?

Thanks for your input!

JP

I have the N90s which is the same camera apparently ... I paid $75.00 from memory and I'd rate it as 8/10 condition wise.

They're a great camera but really worth very little these days.

Peanuts... It's very old technology... and it didn't age well. Unlike their immediate succesors, the F90 is not well adapted to the world of Nikon lenses now. They work with D glass, but I doubt they'll work with G lenses and I'm sure they don't support VR technology.

The F80/N80, the F100 and the F5 still get into this parade. I know because I used a G lens with my former F80. And I have still my F100 and my F5, and I can use my AF-S 24-120 VR on both.

Think carefully, JP. Offer her $40 or $50. Remember, the day you want to sell this F90x you'll have to give it away.

After all, a friend is a friend, right?

I have had an F90x since they came out and still think it was a good film SLR. I remember looking at the F100 and thinking it was not worth the extra and I still have the F90x. Yes they are now worth peanuts, basically disposable. Here is a site that has some price guides http://collectiblend.com/Cameras/Nikon/Nikon-F-90-X.html . I can't vouch for the accuracy of the info but it seems to tally with what others have said in this thread.

I paid for $75 for mine about a year ago at a camera show. Sold it for the same and bought a F100. The last film SLR I will ever need (so long as it lasts). Couldn't be happier. Good luck with your decision.

I paid something like $1000 for mine, new in 1996!

😱

I remember buying mine it was the first autofocus camera I bought I think I paid around £600 or £700 bought a Nikon 28-70 3.5-4.5 lens (I think) at the same time great camera from memory don't have either anymore and never at the same time felt a bit more solid than the f100.
Traded it for my first Canon autofocus body Eos 1n never looked back😀
In the uk £100 for a really good one a nothing for a rough one!

I still have the F801, F801s and F90X that I bought new, many moons ago. They have all done a lot of work, all still work and they are all very very good cameras. If you pay your friend $50 for a good example, it will be money well spent.

I would buy the 90X as it is a great camera. Nice and solid, and as stated above it does work with the G lenses. Bought mine used several years ago, still have it, and still use it. Also get a grip for it. Here in the UK the camera+grip(in exc.++ condition) are going for £99, which is about 1/10th of their price when first brought out.

I got my F90 (non-X) for free when I purchased a 35-70/2.8. It has peeling back but otherwise works great! If I hadn't given up on film I'd probably use it a lot more. Now I can't give it away (literally).

If I were you I'd look for an FM2n.

Thanks for the clarification about the compatibility of the F90! 🙂 I remember how some years ago, when I was shopping for my first Nikon AF camera (which turned out to be the F80), I was told by several people to buy a used F90.

The camera is good and durable... but the control layout (inherited from the previous generations of Nikon AF bodies) changed radically with the F100 and the F5. Echoes of this design can be found even in the D3.

So, will you pick it up? 😕

The peeling back was a common problem IIRC but that is the only real negative that I have heard about.
