I just got an M8 for 2400$ and it's refurbished (although Lecia does not use that word and it's sold through a dealer ). It was listed as condition 10 from a reputable dealer . It includes a 1 year warranty from Leica and allows me to order 2 new UV/IR filters at an size I want. I haven't received it yet but when I do I will check out the actuations. I have 7 days to change my mind. However, for me, the warranty, and the filters added up to a good deal.

I compare my M8 with Canon 1DIII, almost same IQ, and sensor size, used price for 1DIII is around $2000-2500, must be the same for Leica or less.

The Euro trades for US$ 1,50 again. Wonder what will happen now. Will the dollar fall even more? Or will it go up again, like last time it bottomed out at 1,50?

We are holding our breaths over here....

My camera arrived!! It has 283 actuations so practically new! With a 1 year warranty, I feel good about paying slightly more. Although there are cameras selling on ebay for around 2200-2300 that don't have warranty or sometimes even all the accessories.

sounds like you got good deal for the present time...i agree its worth paying a little more for the warrantee...when deals like that are available it makes me wonder what people are thinking, that are still advertising their M8's for 2400-2500+ around various forums etc, hoping to get lucky i guess with buyer that hasnt shopped around

how, on earth does an M8 only have 283 actuactions! good for you but it is mind boggling :D

Thank you. I know - I will probably have at least that many in addition by the end of tomorrow!

This seems like overpaying by quite a bit:

Hi guys,

Is it worth buying an used M8 with an actuation around 70k, come with the grip, with slight wording peeling off on the button indicator side selling at US$2350?

I am from Malaysia (in South East Asia), any advice that I could look for a good condition M8 as for my 1st digital Leica camera?

Thanks

All these crazy rumours circulates over here around the US economy. First of all; the US$ will crash. This has been going around for so long that few believe it anymore. But now some more alarming rumours circulate:

- That the Fed have to pull out 1,4 trillion $ out of the system - which will be impossible, by June 2010 to avoid superinflation. Either or; both will be bad.

- That not 500 or so US banks are in deep trouble, but more like 2000 - to the cost of 800 billion to 1 Trillion US$ through 2010. Which means that the coffers of FDIC will be empty long before the end of 2010. Which means that FDIC cannot provide deposit insurance...

- At the same time, US business press compare the current situation with 'The Great Depression', concluding; 'it is not at all as bad now'.

- The US president decides to send an additional 35.000 soldiers to Afganistan. Financing it through cuts in social spending.

- The president in question, will soon arrive here in Oslo to receive the Nobel Peace Price. He will be wellcomed (Bush was never even that), but will be met by demonstrations demanding; less money to banks, more money to people - and - get out of Afganistan!

Yeah, I was one of the ones who paid $2226 for a M8 on ebay without a warranty from Leica. I got a 30 day money back guarantee from the camera store and was happy with that at least. I simple didn't want to afford more right now and if the shutter goes later, I'll deal with it then. I generally have good luck with electronics and have only had to use my warranty on two things in the past.

...otherwise, I fully agree with senator Jim Bunning that Bernanke must go. We watch the hearings live on TV here in Europe.

Thats a good deal - and if nothing goes wrong you've saved yourself some tidy cash that can go into a lens. I just felt that after spending 2k I'd rather not take the chance....

I understand... I'm taking my chances because I was too cheap to pay more and already had a lens from my M2.

Okay- in my case, $2500 for a near-mint 3 month old M8 with 500 actuations, spare battery, and fitted case. With box and instructions. I figure the battery and case are ~$250, so that makes $2,250 for a near mint camera with low-use.

I could not justify spending the extra $4,500 for an M9 at this point in time with the M8 at this price. I plan on using the D-RF for mostly test and collimation of lenses, and plan on film cameras for outings. At this point, 1/2 of my rolls of film were shot to test a lens after converting it to LTM or shimming a Jupiter for someone. This will speed things up, certainly not done to reduce cost. I do the projects for fun and film money. It's the turn-around time and stacks of film that did it to me.

And if I really like the thing, funds for an M9 are still in the bank collecting interest.

I bought an M9. To do so I recently sold my M8 for $2450.00 CDN. It was in mint condition with all packaging manual and battery. But no warranty. The customer came to my house to see the camera and was very happy with the price as he had been doing some shopping around and was only concerned with the condition of the camera not the price.

an M8 just sold here on RFF for $2400 last night, it was 3 months old from original owner. I offered to buy it, but only if some of the warranty was transferrable. I found out that none of the warranty is transferrable, and that they are discontinuing the M8 (are they discontinuing the M8.2 as well?). I saw an M8.2 for sale as a demo here in San Francisco 2 days ago for $4500 including the 3 year warranty (1 year unconditional + 2 yr passport). I've grappled with this question, but, like many would only opt for buying one for $1500-$1850 or so with no warranty, then immediately send it in for one upgrade to get one year of full-camera warranty, then do the same the next year, and the next. However, I imagine Leica has something up their sleeve with discontiinuing the M8/.2, since they cant financially make alone on limited M9 sales in our current economy.
Thanks Olsen, for your comments, and reminding me of the virtues of being a Norwegian resident. I used to have a gorgeous Norwegain girlfriend, I shouldve married her and moved to Norway!

Well, no chance of that now. Just shows how close big business and the White House are. They say he's the arsonist and fireman for the economy. I'll stick with arsonist.

Limited M9 sales:confused: 50 a day is the absolute production maximum of the factory - and that is what they are selling...
