How much have you paid for Out-of-warranty Repairs for M8 and M8.2?

I'm collecting information for a purchase decision. Where film-cameras are concerned, I have a lot of experience with paying for repairs or doing it myself.

For those M8 and M8.2 users whose camera required an out-of-warranty repair, what went wrong, where did you have it repaired, and how much did you pay for the repair?


I'm watching M8's pop up in the classified, and watching refurbished M8.2's with warranty in shops. I'm leaning towards the latter.

But I wanted to make Joe's 10 most annoying questions on RFF list.

My LCD screen fell off so I sent it off to Solms in October. It is January now and it is somewhere in the post on its way back.
It cost me $1200NZD ($870USD).
From what I have heard it will have.
- A new LCD cover.
- New leather cover (No idea why)
- Readjusted rangefinder.
- Readjusted Shutter.

I am pretty disappointed with the price, and the time it has taken.
But I am also really looking forward to having it in my hands again.

New covering £220. The other costs for repairs were in loss of use. This amounted to around 5 months in three years of ownership.
Loss of use is the biggest cost.

Can't help you much there sorry Brian!

In three years of ownership I've lashed out zero dollars for repairs ... spent a little on practical bling for my M8 which comprised of $100.00 for a second hand M grip and an LCD protector from a Hong Kong eBay seller. Oh yes I forgot ... twenty dollars for a couple of cheap and cheerful Chinese batteries a year or so ago that are still functioning perfectly.

That sounds ridiculous... but seriously, how does an LCD screen fall off? Either you were a bit rough with it or Leica made a lemon.

The LCD falling off is a surprise, but that cost is reasonable compared with Nikon. The professional photographer that did some portraits of Nikki had a three week old D2x. A guest tripped over the tripod it was on, sent it crashing, and broke the LCD. Camera still worked- you just could not do much with it. $1500 repair.

This is all good information for the upcoming decision. In my case, loss-of-use means zero-loss of income. I still like the idea of a warranty on such a major purchase. Film cameras- I would not give a second though to buying without a warranty.

My thought as well Brian. In fact, that was a major reason why I bought my M8.2 from Tony Rose - it came with a 1 year warranty. Hope to never use it (the warranty), but it's nice to know I have a year of safety.

The adhesive fails if it gets to warm. I’m not complaining about the LCD cover coming off, what I find disappointing is the price for them to glue it back on. Not to mention changing the leather (Which was fine!) without consulting me, plus the lack of communication through the whole process and the length of time required to fix it. (It still isn’t here.)

Brian, Mack 1 year warranty for used cameras under $3000 is $100 retail. If something were to happen you'd send it to Mack, most likely they'd send it to Leica. They can fix some things in-house but what they don't, they send to the manufacturer.

That is good to know. That is "dirt cheap" at 3% of the cost of the item being warranted. I'm used to much higher cost for computer systems.

Dear Brian
I am not talking financial outlay directly. But loss of use is time without a camera, and this must cost you something if you bought it for taking pitures with! My M8 was in germany for 5 months out of my 3 years of ownership. If you consider the outlay on a per month basis I lost considerably. We do not have service in my country. Maybe turn around times are better where you are. It is ceratinly something to be aware of prior to purchase.
