Visited a man in the hospital and he asked me if I wanted his old Leica IIIc with 5CM lens. Lens is in rough shape but the body and shutter are in very good shape? I said I would pay him but how much? I want to be fair.

That list, which is what I use, is retail prices or what a brick and mortar store should be asking. Remember, there are also wholesale values to everyting. A wholesale value on a camera and or lens is around 40%. Most price listings are for cameras/lenses in excellent or better shape.

It turned out to be a IIIa and I got it for $100 with lens. How do you set film speed on this rig?

Since the IIIa has no meter, there's no need to set the film speed. The easiest way to remember what's in the camera is to rip the end off the box the film comes in and fold it so it's a snug fit in the accessory shoe.
Oh, and $100 is a very good price. Is the lens usable?

For $100, you got a super bargain. The III series of Leica cameras are classics.

I usually place a little piece of cardboard with the ISO number in the accessory shoe and a small piece of masking tape on the bottom lid with the ISO number just in case I use a seperate viewfinder.

Just drop in some Kodak CN 400 set the Summar to 2.0 and speed to 1000/500/sec and shoot all afternoon in semi shade, that`s my recipe 😉

What a deal!! I'll be looking for photos on flickr. Depending on which Summar you have you might be sitting on a gold mine. Now a good exposure meter is in order if you don't already have one.

It a IIIA in near mint condition with a real nice Summar 5cm/f2 lens and a Metraphot exposure meter. Serial number puts it about 1937.

Since WWII started in late 1939 and finished in 1945, why are Leica cameras - made in the war period - referred to as "pre-war"???

Check the viewfinder and rangefinder for any haze, and shutter for capping. Youxin Ye is very reasonable for Leica CLA's. I had him do the Leica IIIa and III that I picked up at the antique store for $15 each. Check the Summar for haze. The front section unscrews and you can get to the surfaces on each side of the aperture. That is where the haze was on my Summar.
