How ridiculous is this?

It's called American Capitalism. People in the US like to buy overpriced sh*t...like the $20 eyecup for my 10D, or the $15 bottle of water at a rock concert...or Ipods, or cell phones that get replaced after a year, or plastic cups...
IIRC Lomography was spinned by two Austrian students of marketing, so American Capitalism is exempted this time 🙂

I pretty much agree with opinions here.. Lomography did not introduce anything revolutionary into the world of photography. Granted there are numerous good shots done by Lomographs, but they're good not for the reasons stated (break the rules, use crap cameras etc). If you look at them with attention for every rule broken there are two or three that hold up strongly, and many such shots could be done just as well (and often better) with a typical unhip camera.

Another good reason is that usually lomographers go trough a lot of film, helping keeping film alive.

Psss don't tell anyone but I have an Holga, a polaroid Holga, a pinhole Holga, a Diana, a Smena Symbol, 2 Lubitels and a Super sampler.

I've got a Holga too, the great Ian (Jocko) offered it to me 😀 (thanks!!)

A fool and his money are soon parted, heh? ................ Okay, put me down for one......... and uhhh... one for my wife..... oh... and a backup!

Well, I have a Holga too, and I love it, but I dont think Holga is synonymous with Lomo or Lomography. I have a Lomo 35, which I bought for nostalgic reasons from eboy, it was my very first camera when I was a kid, and this lomo isnt offered by lomography. Does it make it a "real" lomo then? (By the way, it has a nice sharp 40mm lens, Industar 73, i think, but the shutter is loud as hell.)
I also have a lomo Lubitel, but only because its the cheapest MF TLR around, and not because I can "take pictures with it jumping from the train" as suggested somewhere on the lomography-site.

For me LOMO is a Russian photo and optics company, and lomography just bullshit that has nothing to do with Lomo.

I agree that for photoraphers that know their f-stops and exposure times, their DOF and FOV, their Delta and T-Max, Lomograpy seems just hype, however please think that it managed to convince thousands of people to start shooting pictures, and some of them eventually will start to get into their f-stops and exposure times and so on.

All in all I really think it is a very powerful instrument to get the masses into film photography, and that can't really be a bad thing!

Yes, I agree with you.
Its not bad of course. But some things about lomography I dont like.

They sell items at overprized prices and build hype around them, for their own profit. it seems to me. Example: Smena for 75 dollars. I don't know, it doesnt seem right.

I'm OK with it for a couple of reasons. First of all, these guys need film in their cameras. Demand for film will ensure that film continues to be produced. Second, despite the high prices that people will pay for these cameras, I'm not in competition with them since I can live without an LC-A. If they start bidding up the price of Jupiter-8's, however...

In my mind, the more people enjoying photography, the better. Plus, some of the toy cam/trash cam stuff I've seen can be really good if done right. Just using one of these cameras is not enough - you still need a good eye, and those that have one can produce good photographs.

What has lomography done to a good old russian LOMO?

who buys this stuff?

I think they would sell better if they came with a pyramid shaped case... you know to help keep the lens sharp.

As long as someone is eager to pay USD 600 for a simple camera as an LC-A is, he´ll also be eager and perhaps proud to pay USD 25 for a 36 shot colour film roll... both cased in pyramid shaped boxes....

OMG!!!

(dont like it!)

I must admit, I'm a big confused by the whole "Lomography" thing. Is anybody that uses a toy camera considered a "lomographer"? Or is that specifically designated for users of the LC-A. Did it originate with the LC-A and then they just branched out to include Holgas and other toy/junk cameras for the hip factor?

The toy cameras that I have are real toy cameras. One of the ones I picked up at a thrift store is in the main a reusable disposible. Takes interesting photos, but the 'lens' is cheap plastic.

I do like shooting with toy cameras. I have two Holgas (one was a gift) and a Diana (I bought it for its different characteristics from the Holga). They go great alongside a Leica. 🙂

I'd invest in a Holgaroid, but I really don't have use for one. Wouldn't have anything to scan it with and the lab would probably look at me funny if I asked them to do it. The Holga 35mm camera may not be too bad of a purchase, though, if I can find one cheap enough.

As an off topic aside, the owner of the (almost) local one hour lab that actually does good work saw my Canon P and asked about it. He knew that I still used film cameras and that I shot mostly black and white, but he didn't know what I traded the Nikon off for until I showed up with the camera to give him a look and ask if he could get me filters. He was impressed. 🙂

Turning a Holga into one that takes 35mm film is easy. When I get home from work tonight I'll post some pics showing how I did.

Using 35mm film in a Holga is fun. However, the new 35mm Holga looks very interesting. For $30, I might pick on up. Here's the description from Freestyle's website

From the same factory that manufactures the famous Holga 120 series of cameras, now comes the Holga 35mm family of cameras starting with the Holga 35mm MF. Featuring a unique image quality all its own but with features galore plus the ease of use of 35mm film. This camera features a 38mm f/3.8 focus free lens, ISO speed adjustment of 100 - 400 ISO, 3 stop aperture adjustment, automatic film load/auto-advance/auto-rewind, built-in pop-up flash with low-light signal and includes a carry strap and plastic camera case.

Wow. Never knew Holga also made a 35mm film camera! Looks quite ugly, though. 🙂

quote from lomo.box.sk :
"'Lomography' is a simple approach not just to image-making but to expressing oneself without all the background clutter of technique. It is not about art but about artlessness: at its best, it can come up with something close to art."

So that's "self-expressive techniqueless artless almost art." Got it. Any questions?

Just kiddin'. Like any photography, I like some of the images that come out of that work. However, like any photography [or art], the images should be able to stand on their own without the props of wordless words. 😉 But what do I know? I'm just a tourist.
