How should I develop these negs?

Hello everyone,

A friend of mine went to India for a couple weeks, so I lent her my Vivitar Ultra Wide & Slim P&S along with a bunch of assorted film rolls as I would love to see what would come out.

She gave me the rolls and camera back yesterday, having ended up shooting only 2 rolls: an Ilford XP2 and a Kodak P3200. I had instructed her about which film to use in each situation, so she somewhat tried to follow it, shooting the XP2 in brighter light and P3200 in darker situations, but I assume there should be some variation in exposures.

I'm trying to figure out what would be the best way to assure the most shots come out properly developed. From what I've shot in iso400 on this camera I guess XP2 should be fine, the P3200 being the one that worries me the most.

Thought of developing both in Rodinal, stand dev, but not sure if it would be the best alternative, since the P3200 could get too grainy. I am aware that XP2 is C41, but since a friend of mine developed Superia 400 in Rodinal stand dev with nice results it could be an interesting solution.

What would you do in this situation? I'm trying to make sure I get the higher number of useable shots as possible considering some variation in exposure between shots. Not sure if I'm looking for magic or if it's indeed possible. 🙂

Thanks!

Stick both rolls in the same tank and use Diafine. No fuss, no muss. Might not be as 'nice' as other developers, but a couple curves adjustments in PS will fix any dullness in the negs.

Does the Vivitar Ultra Wide & Slim P&S support high ISO speeds?

Rodinal gives a miserable true IS0 speed with TMZ, with huge grain. Try DDX or Microphen with the time for EI 1600.

Put the XP2 though a C41 line. Why not?

Cheers,

R.

I'd develop the T-max P3200 in Tmax developer, rodinal will make it look like a hailstorm hit your photos. The XP2 roll can be developed in rodinal, but if you can find a decent lab for the c41 film I'd take it there.
C41 film is going to develop best in C41 chemistry. I'd do everything I can to develop the film in the best chemical for the job.

Send the Ilford XP2 out for official C41 processing. Greater exposure latitude- as promised by chromogenic BW's- is best fullfilled when they are developed in C41.

Developing Ilford XP2 in Rodinal will create images in dense silver. However in C41, all the silver is bleached out, with only translucent brown-black dye images remaining. The dye images will give better and more manageable negatives, even when overexposed.
