how to check for vignetting (from hood/filters)

How do you check if a filter/hood combination works? What setting is the highest chance for this to occur? I think it is wide open but do you focus at infinity or close-focus?

I lost my hood for my Nikon 50mm f2.0 Nikkor HC but another hood fits so I want to check to see if it vignettes, I read that it is difficult to gauge from the viewfinder so i want to sacrifice a roll before ruining my next roll(s).

I also want to know for future reference.

You don't need a film for this. Open the back, set the shutter to B and look from a corner of the film gate through the lens. And from the other side aiming at a corner of the film gate. You can easily see if something gets in the way of the light and if/how the situation changes with aperture and focus.

What ath says. In addition, you only need to check at infinity focus.

I set the lens to infinity, open with B, and look from the corner of the film gate through the lens against a lamp (in the corner of the hood).

I'm having bad vignetting with a FIKUS hood on a 3.5cm Elmar. How can I check my camera? I have a IIIc.

What ath says. In addition, you only need to check at infinity focus..

Unless you're checking out a Holga 🙂 There you can see that the aperture blades aren't even completely visible with the lens at infinity, and they're entirely out of sight in the corners of the frame when moving the lens out..

All of the above advice (back of camera open, shutter on bulb, etc)
...except, I would look thru the lens and make sure you can see all four corners of the film plane.
This is how I adjust the bellows-type lens shade on my 4x5".
