Thank you Pan, the cafe is down an alley, I was able to back just enough to get the whole window on it with the 50mm. Now the cafe will be closed due to corona.

Scenes like this are difficult to print because of the high contrasts.

This thread is making my head hurt. You guys are waaaay overcomplicating a simple thing.

1- Do the 00 first. Pick the time that gives you the highlights you want.

2- Expose your next test strip with that time and the 00 filter then without moving the paper switch to the 5 filter and do your test strip on that same paper. Pick your exposure to get the shadows where you want them.

Easy Peasy. That is about all you need to know so you can stop reading here if it suits you.

Occasionally if you are doing larger prints or using grainy film, the 5 exposure can degrade the highlights. This is because you are actually enlarging the space between the grains. If you notice that happening, back off your 00 exposure a little.

Starting with the 5 exposure is a mistake because the 00 will also add density in the shadows.

That is about as super simple as I can make it. Hope that helps you. :)

I tried this approach yesterday and it worked very well! Thanks so much. Easier than doing separate test strips for 00 and 5 filters, then combining the two.

I agree completely with PRJ! But there will be no difference wich one is done first, 00 or 5.

However, it is useful to make first test strips with only the 00-exposure to determine the exposure time for the high lights. If this is clear, you can start to determine the 5-exposure. This exposure will be very much shorter.

Hi Erik, agreed. I found it much easier make the test strip with the 00 filter only, then judge the highlights and decide on the 00 exposure. Then see the effect of the 5 filter in a new test strip, on top of the 00 exposure. The method worked great for me.
