Interesting thread, where I live we have forecast for a week with daily rain.
I'll try simply to go out with an umbrella and keep the camera under it and under my raincoat when walking, if it rains too strong I'll try the two gallon ziplock bag and rubber bands suggested by Hatchetman.

It works well in light to moderate rain, no high winds. Good for walking dogs, too.

I was standing under an awning. This was a severe monsoon downpour with some 25cm of rain within a 10 to 20 minute period. Only an underwater camera could handle this
en plein air..

I might try some of these ideas with a 3-M camera (metal, mechanical, manual. Thank you, Mike Johnston for the label!), but I doubt if I would want to try them with my digital cameras. None of them are the weather-sealed types.
