Just a quick question - if the image filenames are saved as "_EPS0154.JPG" etc, does it mean that there's been only 154 pics taken with this camera? - Thanks!

Andy, I would say YES to that question, however I think it can be reset...
read here for lots of good info on the R-D1... http://www.richcutler.co.uk/r-d1/r-d1_01.htm
Ps. I have an R-D1 and LOVE IT!

The R-D1 has two settings for file numbering: Continuous and Reset (or something like that)
Continuous numbers the files continuously, regardless of formatting or other interference with the memory card.
The Reset numbers the files continuously, but resets to 000 each time that the card is removed and re-inserted. Therefore, the number might only show _002, but more than 2 images have been taken. Also, this causes there to be multiple _002 images to be created, leading to possible confusion in file organization.

Thank you, Mike and Erik. Does Sequential Numbering have a permanent memory or can IT be reset / wiped out? The manual is not very clear on this:
(the R-D1 is quickly becoming my favorite camera

As far as I know the sequential is forever; though I haven't really tried to reset it.

Thanks, Jim. So it seems seq. numbering (file #) = total # of actuations *unless* it has been messed with in undetermined ways. Ok, I can live with that
