I like the flat, even perspective I get when shooting with a 50mm lens. Distortion is minimal, and I can being able to fine tune the depth of field, which is not as easily done with wider lenses.

I find the visual characteristics of a 50mm lens (or at least the way I use it) to lend itself to a totally different style when shooting on the street.
With a wider lens the resulting images give me more of a sense of being an observer present in the scene. The wide angle of view lets you "look around" when viewing the picture, much like you'd do in real life.
When using a 50 I feel more like I'm making pictures of a scene that is being viewed at a distance. It feels more like putting things in a little box that needs greater organization to work well. It's almost like a single frame of a cartoon or comic book. I hated it at first, but as mentioned above I LOVE the bland look you get with a 50. It's so plain looking that it brings me great joy to find little scenes in real life that when looked at from a distance become quite strange when frozen a put in a little illustrative box where your vision is quite intentionally being directed rather than being encouraged to wander wide and far
I always feel more like I'm looking for quirky little scenes that are amusing from the outside, rather than trying to find something interesting to get right in the middle of.
