How to take off the mounting screw in old Leica M2 case

Hi,
I would like to use the old Leica M2 leather case for my M6TTL. The problem is there is a big mounting screw on the bottom right of the case which its size is large than size of the mounting ring in the M6TTL. I think I should take it out but I don't want to damage the case. If there is any suggestion how to do that, I would highly appreciate.

The problem is that the screw is 3/8" for M2 and you need 1/4" for the M6. I recommend trading the case for one with the correct screw.

I am thinking that there is either a lock-ring at the screw, or that the screw simply unscrews.

If there is a lockring, then remove the lockring and unscrew it.

If there is no lockring, find the thread in the base (probably is a metal plate) and unscrew the big knob.

Yes, I did exactly this. You WILL ruin the case to get the tripod fitting out, but if it's a beater, that might not matter. The large plastic knob-thing is held in by a shim about the size of a quarter that is sewn between the inner and outer layer of the case bottom. You'll need to disassemble the case by either a) slittlng the leather with a very sharp blade (I used an Xacto knife) and peeling it back, which is glued as well as sewn, or b) slice away the inner felt and try that way. The shim is riveted to the knob and will have to be cut to be removed, so you'll need to fashion another shim out of something thin and flexible, like a part of an aluminum can, when you find another knob/socket.
I'd look for another case, frankly. Unless you have a day or two to kill.

I did exactly this a few weeks ago. Insert a screwdriver between the outside part of the screw and the case and lever hard. The case is not exactly written off but I'm not sure how you'd get the screw back in.

Mind you, mine was all alloy (not plastic) and 1/4 not 3/8 (both sizes were available).

Thank you for your recommendations, I will try to use a table drill. Not sure where I can find one now.
