How to take top cover/plate off?

Hi,
I was wondering if there is an easy way to take a top cover/plate off of the Leica IIIf ? I have a regular one thats just fine, but I came across a black one. So, if there is a way I can do it myself, - that is switch the two, I'll go for it, but, if I have to sent it to a repairman, well, might as well skip it. So, Is it easy? Or is there online step-by-step manual?

You're going to mess with history swapping the serial numbers around. Particularly since there's another serial number inside that won't match when you're done.

You have to pull about 20 parts to get the top cover off. Unless you plan to get really good small screwdrivers, don't start down that path. You would also need a spanner, and some ring wrenches.

It takes special tools to remove the top plate from a IIIf. If you use any tool you'll damage the camera and possibly render it useless.
As has been pointed out the s/n of the top plate should match the s/n of the crate.
In the old days when you could sent your camera to Leica for top plate replacement they would engrave the s/n from the crate on the new plate.

Thanks for the info guys. I really don't mind 2 different serial numbers - I don't plan on selling it, so it would go down with me. However, all the little screws and such do bother me. Wow - pulling 20 parts to take the top off? I guess I will keep it the way it is. Oh well. I saw someone's Leica repainted professionally here and was hoping to get it done cheaper. But........it looks like it's easier to leave it alone.

I have a IIIc that is flaking chrome badly. I'm thinking about stripping it down for CLA and sending the parts out for de-chroming then repainting it with a satin black auto paint.

I would leave the IIIf top the way it is, that would be my first choice.
2nd choice would be to take it to a competent camera tech.

If I recall you could order a black paint top plate for the IIIf but most you'll find are after market done.
