How would this do on an M8/9?

That lens seems to me like one of those conceptual projects--you have to know what it is for it to be interesting. Otherwise the shots look like iphone images ran through one of the ubiquitous black and white photo apps like the "hipstamatic" app. My two cents

Well, it was enough of an inspiration to me when I stopped in an antique store in West Virginia today, and purchased an S-K f1.8 7-56mm Variogon zoom lens. If I ever get a DSLR I can mount it on, it will at least be fun to use.

C-mount lenses (lots of great and fun ones to try) on a EVIL or m4/3s cameras. Should work on an M8 but I think it will be into the body too much as the film to rear lens distance on the C-mounts is much smaller than a Leica M.

Bill, that Variogon is a larger mount than a C. I have a couple of C mount lenses, and the S-K is not similar. It is almost 45mm across, with a four hole flange on the screw portion of the barrel, and a large baffle on the rear. That could be milled down, but still would project into the mirror box a bit. Another feature is the lens is self erecting, and has a mask inside. I'll have to do some research to see what it was used on.
