Hello all,

I've recently acquired a lot of Ilford HP5. Does anyone have any experience pushing it to get higher contrast? I really like Tri-X @ 800. Is HP5 at all similar?

Thanks,
-Andrew

I rgularly shoot HP5+ at 800 and 1600, developed in DD-X as Ilford recommends. Development times are in their product sheet. Very happy with the results.

HP5 and Trix-X are not similar neither in normal ASA setting nor when pushed. Tri-X is contrastier and grainier. But I have pushed HP5 to 1600 without problems, and processed with Ilford LC29. There was not more grain than with Delta 3200 @ 1600.

I use Microphen at 1:1 and get absolutely beautiful negs. Sparkly despite the very flat winter light here in northern VT. I shoot at 800 and run for 14 1/2 to 15 min @70°F.

HC-110b isn't so bad either- shoot at 800 and run for 8 minutes @70°

It has been a very long time since I pushed either Tri-X or HP5. However, my recollection is that the Tri-X was a little better. Interesting to see so many above who believe it is as good or better. Maybe I was just doing something wrong.

I really like it at 800 in Xtol stock. I've been shooting a lot at 1600 (metered 1250) and developing in HC110 H using a semi stand method, it's grainy but has a tonality that really serves the purposes of what I'm working on right now.
