No connection to the seller, don't know if the lens or price is good etc, but this may be of interest to someone:

Good question. The listing does mention aperture and focusing scales, so presumably they are there. Could it be a fake?

I think the ring is there. Note the protrusions in the 1 and 7 o'clock positions. Can't see the aperture scale though. Could be on the underside, the listing does say they are there.

Then why not post a picture of it? Hmm

The seller is a Bric-a-brac dealer and so wouldn't know what to show. He thinks it is Probably an enlarger lens. If I was interested in bidding, it would be simple to ask him to send some photos of the area of interest.

This is what I mentioned on the other thread yesterday. Not all eBay sellers know what they are selling (at least they do not have detailed knowledge). They are often concessionaire sellers who sell stuff for others on commission.
In fact, these are where the eBay bargains are. It's a gamble and you have to know your own level of "risk tolerance" but I've wound up with some nice gear buying from such sellers.

Hopefully for a bit longer this time and no more family disasters.

The aperture adjustment "ears" are there but it sure looks an awful lot like a Jupiter-3. The earliest J-3's had the ears. More detailed pictures would be needed to make a determination though. If I were interested (I'm not) I'd ask for those pictures or just not take a chance.

Lenswise, this is REALLY an interesting one.
i) When I turn my 1.5/5 Contax Sonnar the other way 'round, there is no number to be seen on the aperture ring whatsoever. So I guess the seller just didn't know what would be important to be seen on the photograph.
ii) The serial number is about the FIRST one I have seen anywhere in the net that complies with the CZJ numbers listed in H. Thiele's reference book. I read 27246X3, and the little ridges on the back clearly seem to be an M39 LTM. What Thiele states is the following:
"CZJ Registry Card #8941: Sonnar f/1.5, 5 cm. Calculated 15-08-39, Lot of 3.000, S/N from 2.724.501 to 2.727.500, Mount: Contax, Production ongoing from: 29-01-43 - partly M39"
iii) No black front ring, small red triangle to be seen in the photo, and small "m" mark on the focus scale according to the seller - all signs of an original lens.
iv) Due to the large amount of Sonnars produced in this serial number range, the pure statistical chance of having one of the survivors in LTM is high.
Hey Roland and all you Zeiss Addicts, we have been discussing Zeiss Jena LTM lenses and their dubious origins for ages in this forum, and here is the first one I would put at least some belief in. THIS could be the HCB Sonnar...
GO FOR IT!

Well, I didn't place a bid. Favourite collecting field for me is Zeiss but in Contax mount. If I start a second area it would be somewhat explosive for my collecting activities and cutting a six inch valley through the middle of my bank account. But BOY, was that tempting...
Another member mailed me a PM that his female government prevented him from placing a bid
.
Well, who is the lucky one? Come on, we're not envious, or are we...?

I did place a bid. About 45 dollars and 3 seconds short. Typical
