Somebody apparently tried to remove the Leica name. That person was trying to make a Zorki copy! 😀

That was probably done "way back when" to avoid paying import fees. I've heard of this before, "defiling" the camera avoided paying the duties.

I've seen brassing before but can't recall seeing pitting like that, and mostly on the bottom. Moisture rich environment is my guess???

I have a IIIc that has the Leica "lovingly" scratched off. I bought it from the son of the original owner. According to the son, the father had to scratch it off to get it into the US from Germany after the war. Appently there was an embargo on goods with German trade names or something. To get around the law, people would scratch out the Leica brand name. The story was kind of unclear, but that is what I heard. A ldecient amoun of post war barnacks have scratched out logos. Maybe it was like going through customs now. Only the people stopped had to scratch out the Leica name.
