HU:R-D1 for $1200 BIN on ebay

These are getting cheaper and cheaper ... for obvious reasons I guess. That said a digital rangefinder for this price is pretty appealing and you have to wonder when they may dip below $1000.00?

Yes, it is tempting. I've seen wonderful photos from the R-D1 posted here. Its output is appealingly film-like for a digital camera.

What's off putting is that it's still quite a lot money for a camera that's getting long in the tooth by digital standards and which might not be repairable if it were to fail. Sophisticated modern cameras do have a depressing ability to die spontaneously because one of several thousand tiny components fails.

Are they getting cheaper? This one seems unusually cheap, other recent ones seem to be more in the $1500- 1700 range. Or is there a less expensive source I haven't seen?

Thanks

I dont know who got it - not me ;), but I'd be rather questioning this auction - too low of a price - these can sell for a lot more still. Not much of a description. Looks like it was a quick, no questions asked kinda sale. I wonder if it is indeed fully functioning camera? Or worse - a stolen one? In any case I'd rather pay more and get one from Japan, from a well known seller. But thats me.

perhaps a camera dealer?

perhaps a camera dealer?

Perhaps a camera dealer bought it to resell? I'd prefer to get more new "refurbs" from the Epson store for about $1400 shipped, but it's good to know that a steady suppy is currently availble from Matsuiyastore and others, and even better to know that there are folks who can fix these when they need fixing.

At a price of $1000 I would get a second body for sure and forgo my current M8 gas attack.

Well I really like the handling, and the look of the images, but I have a heck of a time adjusting the RF. I am very close to selling mine to someone who has more patience with it!

$1000 is way too low. A good 'used' R-D1s will go for 1500+. The fact that it still gets good reviews against the only other DRF in the world, which should blow its doors off but doesn't, means it will hold that price. I just ordered a couple of parts for my rd1s from japan to do a minor self repair of the SD assembly, and can adjust the RF no problem. It my be getting "long in the tooth", but it still has plenty of bite.
