Hurricane Dean is Coming

I hope that all of us will be spared the damages of a hurricane this summer. It looks as if Hurricane Dean will soon hit Jamaica (?) and then either Mexico or the Gulf Coast/Texas area. Of course, hurricanes often change path, and then it may come a different direction.

This is the first time that I will be away from home during a possible projected hurricane event. We will know more about the path of Dean by Monday or Tuesday [when I am scheduled to leave to Portugal].

Since we are on the topic of hurricanes, what is your typical method to take care of belongings in the wake of a hurricane?

Drive away?
Go to shelter?
Stay at home in a safe room?

We had such hot weather for the past week, and this hot weather will most likely "inspire" additional hurricanes this season.

I wish everybody a safe hurricane season.

My family always planned to ride out a Cat3 or less ... at least until Katrina (I'm in New Orleans, the Third World of the USA). My wife and I left for Katrina, but didn't take nearly as much with us as we could have or should have. I would say for a Cat3 or greater, take as much of your important/dear possessions with you as you can and get out of the way. I left before Katrina with 3 changes of clothes, my mp3 player, and 2 cameras. I could have brought a lot more with me. Luckily my house was OK, but you never know.

Since Katrina, I've been added to the ride-out team at the hospital where I work, so I'll be here regardless of how strong the next storm is. I plan to bring plenty of everything, especially film, if that happens, but I'm praying it never does.

I hope that we all will not face another hurricane. In your case, Katrina was severe.

I am now about 50 miles inland at about 700 feet above sea level. Rain and wind can pack a big punch for me, but I have no fear of flooding.

i only have to worry about blizzards, snow blindness, slipping on ice and breaking my hip...and tailgaters on snowy roads.

Thank you, Magus. I have never taped up windows or used wood to protect the home. I know, I should have.

Don't bother to tape up the windows -- it won't do any good and it'll probably leave ugly adhesive residue X's on the windows when you take it down. Boarding up isn't a bad idea, though.

I wouldn't worry too much about Dean, I think you and I are safely out of the cone on this one.

I agree. The people of Jamaica should be in all of our thoughts right now.
