The other day I accidentally dropped the original Bakelite lens cap of my '53 I-22. I watched it shatter into pieces as it hit the ground. Looking around the house I found that a Gat*rade bottle cap fits just right.
The inside thread of the bottle cap holds on to the front ring just right - and does not hit the focus scale ring, when collapsed.
Even fits into the ever ready case.
Still sad about losing the original cap, but happy enough, to have found some protection.

I used to go through the trouble of removing the threads, and then installing some stick-on felt. Sometimes they worked, sometimes they didn't, like if the felt rolled the first time the cap was used.

Excellent! I have an I-22 I just finished cleaning so this tip is pretty handy.

My girlfriend made fun of me the other day when she realized that the lens cap on my shiny Biotar 75 was formerly the lid from a jar of chicken bullion. Hey, it fits! And even better, it doesn't fall off.
