I'm in Vancouver. I don't have any space for you to stay, but I can recommend a few places to go check out.

Improving daily--I think.
I'm in Langley, about 35 miles east of Vancouver, so I'm not as familiar with the city as others may be but I can still suggest many possibilities if you don't get good ideas from the "city-dwellers". You've got lots of time to plan so we can keep in touch between now and then. One thing I could offer is a day-trip up the Fraser Canyon--a couple hundred miles to the east--to see some of the "rest" of our lovely province. I'm an avid railfan and there's no better place to watch and photograph trains than up through the Canyon--we might even get you hooked on the game yourself.
In any case, there are a number of us on here from the area and I'm sure we'll be able to book you for far more activities than you'll have time for. And September is a wonderful time to visit--the weather is normally good, the bugs are gone and so are the majority of the tourists. The only thing you won't get to see is our famous rain...

Simon, No fear - there will be plenty of film available. I think my stock of Arista/Trix in either "regular" cassettes or IXMOO's is in the neighborhood of 1000 -1200 rolls - and even I would be hard pressed to finish that by September (and Freestyle can ship overnight if needed).

Don't miss a trip out to the Gulf Islands (San Juans on US side). Late summer early fall is the perfect time to go out to Salt Spring island. The ferries are easy and a fun place to photograph people as well. Vancuver is a beautiful city mostly because of what surrounds it in nature.

Deutsche Haus is also home to the vancouver Camera Collectors monthly meeting - every first tuesday of the month, Anywhere from 15 or more "camera" nuts congregate, mini-swap mart and usually a presentation of interesting stuff. Great schnitzels and beer too. Usually people start showing up at 5-5.30, eat and then the meeting starts at 7'ish. Memebership is a staggering $20/year - easily recouped by selling something - and NOT buying something else (so far that has not worked for me - but it is mostly reasonably priced stuff and odd accessories that are recycled).

Vancouver is a great city. I recommend the UBC museum of native culture/art. Also, a grilled salmon-on-a-plank. While Vancouver is a cosmopolitan city, it is at the edge of a massive wilderness. I don't know how you photograph that, but for a European, that conceptual abyss may be interesting.

I went there last night. I also went to a place called the Cobalt which is pretty seedy and makes for decent photos-- bathtub for a chair, etc kind of place.

Anybody remember the bar down the street from the Ivanhoe? I think it was called "The All American" something or other. In the '90's the Ivanhoe was a hipster kind of place but just down the road was something altogether more interesting. Never seen guys in wheelchairs have a good scrap!

The old american. Great place... Went through a few weird stages though. In the mid 90's it was a big skinhead hang out until a big rumble went down and the shaved head crowd was told to leave town. Good times.
If you step out the back and looked straight across the big empty lot behind it you could see my digs on Atlantic. A short stumble.
