I just sold all my digital gear and am left with my lovely m gear 🙂 It was hard to do but I think I will get over it 🙂

We're in the same boat. I sold everything digital (except my film scanner) in order to fund the completion of the RF645 kit.

Now, I'm preparing to sell off the scanner as well - so that I might have money for photography.

Being clean of the digi-disease is a great way to be.

Turn off the brain, let a guy with big hair do the thinking for you - ah, Book of Emulsion, Chapter 13, verse 23: "And the Lord of Silver spaketh unto Jorge, and said unto him ''Casteth off thine digital shackles, because that stuff sucketh anyhow.''"

Just don't come to my house with a copy of Filmtower under your arm and we'll be ok.

Well... George, you just confirmed what I had feared about digital.

Jorge, you may as well stay away from digipixels. Although I considered your acquisition of the Leica module a very bold move.

I have to say, I have never enjoyed photography so much as I do now. Being without a digital camera is like not having a car. You just see so much more, I think. Forced to take your time a bit, forced to really put some thought into the whole thing.

I buy a cheap film (that I absolutely LOVE), in bulk, shoot fearlessly because it costs little, and develop the negs myself - getting exactly what I want. And it is all so organic and personal and it feels like every part of the process is MINE. I feel that I create images, really bring them to life now more than ever. And shooting with digital is a miserable excuse for the process. Photoshop and all.

I consider the possibility of getting rid of my film scanner to afford a real darkroom setup.

I am very near to doing that, if anyone wants a very clean Konica Minolta Dimage Scan Multi Pro and a Canon IP5000. It will probably be in the classifieds sooner than later.

True of film stuff now as well -have you seen the price of Eos bodies lately? No one wants second hand anymore. Jessops in the UK has just disbanded its entire second hand department -and it's the largest photography retailer in the country

That probably has more to do with Ebay prices undercutting secondhand dealers. I have a very good secondhand dealer near me, but their prices are always at least three times what I would pay on Ebay, so I rarely consider them.

yeah. You're right. The prices on SLRs have dropped dramatically. I think for a different reason, though. They still have more value than an obsolete digicam.

I see Nikon F bodies go for decent prices, though.

About stores getting rid of their secondhand - I've seen that here in Seattle as well. Good for us, though. Means more stuff will hit the net, more people will be trying to sell their stuff off, and that means better prices.

I guess 35mm SLRs just fit the category that high end digital fills so well. We, the RF users, are safe in our spot for a while. Except for Leica, I don't see any major manufacturer breaking out a digital rangefinder. They just wouldn't have the market.

In the end, I think a film system has a higher inherent value. Or more accurately, I higher minimum value. A 6MP DSLR will drop to lower value over time than a good SLR like the Nikon F system. 35mm is always 35mm. Digital sensors will grow in numerous aspects from size to DMAX to resolution to color range.

During the computer boom, at the beginning when personal computers were taking over word processing, I remember people figured their typewriters would become worthless, impossible to sell. One might have said at the time that they would become utterly valueless . . .but a good typewriter is worth a larger portion of its initial value than is an ancient computer. You couldn't even GIVE a monster 1980s desktop away. Those ones with the green screens and 5 inch floppies.

Had too much experience with electronics and computer components now to think that a hugely expensive multi-MP DSLR now is going to be working very well in 10-15 years' time. But then again, people are increasingly willing to accept that the things they buy have very limited lifespans these days, and are willing to shell out every 5-6 years for an upgrade.

Even some of the newish LCD monitors at my workplace have blown pixels. But that's no problem because none of them are going to be around in 10 years' time, are they?

This probably explains the crappy plasticky construction of most modern SLRs and dSLRs.

Anyway Jorge, I just have one word for you: CONGRATULATIONS! 🙂
