We decided not to go...again. Most likely we'll be going sometime in the spring after we both have plenty of money and we can plan the trip better. I'd been saying that I want to go over closer to Utah to photograph some ruins and that kind of thing takes more planning.

If you think you'll be using Diafine mostly I'd say try the first roll at about 400 and see how it comes out. If too flat or seemingly underexposed start to adjust and shoot the next roll at 800, 1000 or 1600 and go from there. For your first roll only wind on about 12 frames or so, no reason to waste too much experimenting. (That's what I did on a 1994 bulk roll of APX25 I got a hold of recently. I'm happy to say it came out great with no adjustment seeming to be necessary for a 12-year old film).

Diafine's box says Tri-X at 1600 and I find it comes out really nicely but I only use Tri-X in Diafine for high contrast situations or night shots where there is a lot of lights vs the darkness.

I've attached a nice one taken recently on Tri-X @ 1600 in Diafine (an expired batch from a bulk roll bought off eBay---but it was only a few years expired).

I don't believe that a roll of film was kept frozen non-stop during 20 years or even more. It's just something I cannot believe, no matter who tells me such a thing.

I have, hanging above me, the first (short) roll of Plus-X. It'll go on the chopping block and into the scanner (for this is the last time I'll use this scanner) tonight before I sleep because I'm too damn excited to see the results. They aren't shot with a rangefinder, though, so I'm going to put them on my blog and you can give me your impressions here or there. I'll write down what ISO the shots were taken at as well.
