Tomorrow, I am driving with my family to the Great Smoky Mountains, in Tennessee (USA). It is one of my favorite places for photography and for unwinding in the beautiful nature there. There are mountains and streams and meadows and animals and waterfalls. It will be rather cold (for a Floridian like me), but I will manage.

I will take along the following equipment:
1. My newly acquired Horizon 202 35mm panorama camera.
2. Bessa T plus maybe a Canon rangefinder body as back-up.

Lenses: 25mm/35mm/50mm/90mm and that's it. The 25mm CV and the Canon 35mm/1.8 both are tiny and feather-light. The 50mm lens will most likely be a Summicron and so will the 90mm. This is far lighter than my usual Canon SLR outfit for the Smokies, which typically includes a Canon 500mm/4.5L lens plus a variety of Canon lenses from 7.5mm up.

I will miss this forum for a while, but will be back to see how people are doing.

Cheers,
Raid

Enjoy your trip! I live to the east of the Smokies, but often take the Blue Ridge Parkway from Virginia down to South Carolina, incredible views!

Best Regards,

Bill Mattocks

Raid if possible please post some of your Horizon pics. I'm tempted to buy one since I saw it for the first time at Photokina '02.

And when you're back, you have to tell me if the lens moves when exposing the film.

Happy snaps!

Volker

Hello Bill and Volker,
I will do my best enjoying the trip.

Bill: I went to Vriginia Tech for my graduate degrees, and you may know the area around there. Living there for about 5.5 years was a big change from Baghdad, as you may guess. It allowed me to love Nature and then get into serious photography.

Volker: I will do my best to come back with good slides/photos with the Horizon 202. Mine is nearly new. I got it in the box from someone who had just bought it. (Some German: Ich kenne mich gut aus in Deutschland. Meine Schule in Deutschland war das Nikolaus Cusanus Gymasium in Bad Godesberg!)

Thanks Joe. I wish you and the "rest" a great Christmas break, whatever you will be doing.

Have a good trip, Raid!! The Smokies are beautiful. Make sure to swing by Gatlinburg, TN if you're nearby. That place is the tackiest tourist trap in the east, but it's got to be seen at least once. ;)

Hi Captain: Thanks! In fact, we are staying in Gatlinburg. It is a tourist trap in the summer, but not so badly in the winter and part of spring. I have been there many time. There is more to do there than in quiter towns, like Townsend. As for Pigeon Forge, it is one of the ugliest places anywhere, in my opinion.

One of my favorite winter spots is Cades cove. But I do carry my F1 and a 400 f2.8L. lots of deer and bear.. I am leaving tomorrow for north Ark. Mountain View has a wonderful light display and lots of street music. I love the Ozarks in the winter. I have a camper complete with a satellite dish and a laptop. Some modern technology is usefull

We drove through Cades Cove twice. There were some deer, and a few horses in the distance. The cold weather did not help much in seeing animals.
