Raid,
I do understand the idea and direction for the CD version of NG. I'm also very tickled by the prospect of being able to spotlight my entire NG collection.
But, I love my hard-copy collection of NG. I love it... pulling out a random magazine and sit with a coffee or a glass of port late in the evening reading a old NG magazine.

Hello Bo,
It may be a generation gap or maybe it is me being married with kids where I find myself having less time spent reading NG and similar material while I am more often online. I used to greatly enjoy my quality times with a cup of hot tea and reading NG magazines when I was younger and there was no internet.

Reading and re-reading, and any photo magazine, or book, was pretty much worn out at one time by the time it was tossed.
However, that said, when I travel, and want my instruction manual for a camera, I tend to download it, putting it on the desktop of my netbook, but I just began to travel more with a computer.
While blaming competition with computers and other media for the demise of magazines, I watched the PBS special, When Life Was Young, with interviews with four former Life Photographers, and of course it was in Hi Def TV, and I Tivo'd it.
I also have some magazine articles given to me on a DVD, just practical for travel.
Reminds me also how journal articles were put on reserve in the Library at University, if I do that now for my classes, they are either stolen, or just not read.
I used to find myself hanging on to magazines, with the intention of referring back to them as reference. With Stephen Jay Gould, I used to buy his books as the chapters were generally reprints of his best articles.
I recall Sept. 78 Scientific American was entirely on Evolution, with articles from some of the best minds on the subject. I kept two copies.

I've just cancelled my NG subscription due to the Green American slant the whole publication has taken on. Looking back through the years, NG is a pitiful shell of its former balanced and scientific self.
What is "Green American"?

What is "Green American"?
Well, Ray, there is a Pink American Barbie Doll version, and then there is a Red American with socialist tendencies, and there is a Blue American who loves the blues ... etc.
Take your pick.

But I have to admit, I've got more than enough crap in piles and boxes. The last thing I need is several more boxes of stuff.
This part sounds similar to what my wife says, but she does not use the word "crap".

Non-Brown, non-Black, non-Red and non-Blue. They have run out of color codes, cause who wants to be an Orange American, or worse yet Chartreuse?

How I describe the focal shift at NG from a balanced scientific World view to an environmentalist American one.

This brings up a fine memory, Raid. As a child, we had a room with a wall filled with NGs - starting in 1952 and running to 1981. I'm pretty sure I read them all before I left for university in 1981. In that same room I found my great-grandfather's IIIa with a coated Summar in a drawer. Both things affected my life in a very real and deep way....

A friend's son decided to help out when his parents were out of town, he tossed out a bunch of files and magazines, and $4000 in cash in them.

FYI: Library book sales in my area will not even accept National Geographics as donations for resale. You might want to check the value of those old photo books.

Raid,
There are some things that a lcd monitor will never be able to replace... incuding the printed page and photographic print... and I am no retro-grouch... I literally could not survive without my computer... my entire business is based on the internet... and what did we do before Google, eBay and RFF...
But staring at a computer screen is not the same as browsing my collection of 300+ National Geographic's and after selecting an issue, settling into my lounge chair with a bourbon in hand... I do not live my life through a box(screen)... maybe that is why I am not a fan of TV either...
And my children are always grabbing issues of National Geographic and reading them... they spend enough time in front of the box... computer, TV, or game console... reading 'real' literature is encouraged in our house.
Oh... mp3 players are banned from our household as well, we have a real audio system... vintage 70's power amps, 4-way speakers with 15" woofers, and turntable with a large collection of vinyl... I would consider myself a failure if my children never heard 'real' music...
Just my 2¢...
I love you, man!

I have seen vintage photo magazines -- very early -- selling for very high prices, I think they were Duotone printing?

It's scary how many kids who have never heard a good stereo system , used a camera with shutter / aperture controls , driven a car without power steering or air con ?
The times may be a-changing - but books and mags don't need a digital interface , with built in absolesense . Having said that I have vandalised all my old favourite mags , to keep just what seems essential to me .

In the end, I managed to take with me all National Geographic magazines and books to our new home. Thanks for your support.

good to see they still have a nice home. if you donated them to a library, they probably would have tossed them in the dumpster!
i saved such a donation, and have been thumbing through dozens of issues on the weekend. lots of good stuff from sam abell, of course, but also william albert allard and david alan harvey.
