ok, seems oscar has planted an expensive idea in my week willed mind.

my 50/1.9 collapsible is away for repair and i had intended to sell it when it returned.
i was gonna sell it because it does not fully collapse on any of my current cameras and that was my intention when i bought it, a nice small package to carry around everyday. (yes, i did not do the research)
then oscar suggested that it WOULD fit on a knob wind canon.

genius!

so, i'm looking for advice on these older canons.
i plan on reading my canon book but would also like some input from youse guys, especially if you have used this lens on a similar set up.

which body to buy?

The IIf that I picked up is very nice, and handles much faster than you would think. But I have only used the 50mm F1.5 lens on mine...

Ni X-Sync. But I have yet to use a flash on any of my Canon RF's.
 
i don't normally use a flash either.
as long as the lens collapses fully into the body and i can carry it easily i think i'll be happy.

rover, what's with the iv that you like it so much?

Oh, I was reading the Canon RF Book and it says this model of the IV is the best bottom load RF camera made, better than the Leicas. No personal experience.
 
i kinda remember something like that from my first reading of the book.
will need to look it over again.

does anyone know how i would be able to tell if a model can or can't accept the 50/1.9 all the way in?
i don't recall a list or anything...

The Canon book identifies the standard lens options for each camera. It probably isn't a complete list becasue the lens was discontinued before some bodies were offered, but that would be a start.
 
The IVSB2, IIF2, IIS2, and IID2 have an improved finder that is less squinty. If you come to the bottom-loaders from the later models, you really might not like the finders at all on the earlier models. Very small rear lenses.

Easiest spotting sign for any of these is the notched ring around the exposure counter ring, which was a film length reminder. The pointer in the middle of the shutter speed knob is the other sign, but harder to spot in a bad picture.

Of these 4, only the IVSB2 is reasonably common. All fetch a premium price as users.

I didn't know I had such power ! :eek: Maybe I should write some words to Leica and start sending subliminal messages about M7s and R9 digital backs instead of M3s or Canon RFs :rolleyes:

i think it was genius to think of it cause my mind was not going in that direction at all.

however it will have to be put on hold as i think i may have overextended myself, finance wise.
but i like the idea of having an older rf to carry around all the time.

The later thumbwind Canons look indeed nice, but *maybe* a Zorki 3M will accept it as well and it's cheaper...

And I have yet another idea ! Get a thumbwind Canon for the 50/1.9 AND take advantadge of Gandy's free shipping days and order a 28/35 minifinder for it ! Imagine a beautiful Canon IV with the 35/2.8 or the 28 Canon and the minifinder. Powerful and compact, the dream of a street shooter...

Hmmm, I'm better stopping :rolleyes: :p
 
A Leica IIIc or IIIf will suit that 1.9 Canon 50mm just fine. I do not agree with Peter Decherts opinion that the IVSB2 and its improved relatives, are the finest bottom loader made. I have used a IIS2, but find the seperate viewfinder/ rangefinder of the Leica Ltms superior in actual use.
 
I been using Canon and Nikkor lenses on Leicas since I sold my Ltm Summarit in 1979, once I got hold of the japanese glass, I never looked back. I use FSU Jupiters on Leicas also. A good lens does not have to be made by Leitz , and only Leitz, some of their 1950s vintage lenses great lenses , but a few were just average IMHO.
