Okay, maybe just a C, since it needed no L or A.
Last night, through the help of a couple older threads on RFF, I removed the rear eye piece lens and cleaned it. But the biggest change was in the cleaning of the prisms. There was a very heavy haze on each one of the mirror surfaces. I just cleaned the lenses and mirror surfaces with my usual lens cleaner, "Formular MC" from The Filter Connection. Quite a difference in the clarity now!

A few weeks ago, I did a C&L on my 1946 Summitar. I know these are both relatively simple jobs, but I really had fun it fun and found it satisfying to do the work myself. Now I need to do a CLA on an old 90/4 Elmar. Any suggestions?

Good going. The Elmar 90 has a simple construction, and if you could handle a Summitar you should have no trouble.

These are remarkably easy to disassemble and clean. I don't know of any other piece of photo equipment that is quite so straight forward. I have done a couple and it is great fun to get such good results from a fairly simple job. It seems you had a similar experience to me. I was very pleased when I did mine. I have also done something similar with a Braun turret finder and a Canon vari-finder. But getting to the front elements can be a bit more fiddley.

Cleaning mine was a pain. The view through it was hazy, due to dirt and there was some separation of the adhesive between the prism elements. They spent some time in the oven ;)

When everything was put back together the view through it was much improved, but still not optimal. I rarely use it, sticking with my VIDOM most of the time.

Meh, The VIOOH was only a bargain from KEH, so I don't mind.

Thanks for the replies, guys. This forum sure is filled with a wealth of knowledge!

payasam: Mt 90 Elmar has a really tight lockring on the rear element. And it's obvious that someone else had problems with it's removal once before, as one of the slots is chewed up a bit. I'm going to get the proper tool before I go any further on this.

Thanks, guys!

I just cleaned mine.

Upon removal of the prism, a piece of glass came off. I checked the prism, it looked perfect though!

Viewing through the VIOOH has never been better!
