On one hand, I love, love my rangefinders (latest squeeze is my Zeiss Ikon) and other hand I hate my Nikon D70s (bulky, complicated, no soul).

Let me start over: On one hand I love my Nikon D70s (it is so convenient, great shots with almost no effort, RAW, instant photos, etc.) and on the other hand my ZI sits with inconvenient film because either I have to develop on my own (which when I actually ramp up is great fun, shhhh) or send to a lab and wait and lose control of the creative process.

This is not a GAS attack, it is photo bipolar!!! Anybody else suffer like me. (Don't worry it's not as bad as it seems. The ZI is not leaving my possession.) But...... I need a tranq!!!!:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:
 
I should be so cursed.

I love my film cameras, I currently can not justify the expense of a new digital camera.

So I shoot mostly large format these days.

Go figure. :)

I'm torn between the love for mechanical cameras, and the laziness that sometimes makes me reach for the digital camera... all with the fear that film sooner or later could be doomed....
 
Akiva, look at it this way: You've got feet planted firmly in both camps, and can go one way or the other, as your needs/fancy dictate.

I often heard this, but I don't get it. Where exactly do I lose control of the creative process if my film is developed in the machine at the minilab?

The machine gives me far more consistent results than I would ever be if I develop the film myself. So that leaves me with a lot of parameters to control my "creative" process. If the last roll is a bit blown out, I use the same film batch and crank down the aperture, and the next roll would be perfect to my taste.

BIG NOTE: I do not pay the minilab to print or scan, ONLY develop and cut into nice strips of 4 with the nice sleeves. Therefore I have total control on how to post-process the images.

So again, where do I lose the control?

I think the loss of control is in the print not the film...I take my C-41 in for developing/CD only...
B&W is done at home...

Got rid of D70s and went film exclusively. I just got tired of erratic autofocus, unusable viewfinder for manual focus, weird color casts and buggy Nikon software.

Couldn't be happier w/ film. As for the convenience of digital, if it's not worth going thru the paces of loading film and having it developed it's not worth photographing.
 
I used to feel conflicted. But I realized that my soulless, heavy, loud, unnecessarily complicated D200 is to be used for commercial work and my ZI-M, Nikon F3 and 38 year old Mamiya-Sekor SLR are used for everything else.
