Or I think I do, at least. I don't have it yet.

I bought a Leica IIIc with that summitar for $250. Any idea what that could be? I figured, for $250, that leaves me room to have the lens repaired. I have no idea whats wrong with it, though, especially because I don't have the lens yet.

Has anyone ever seen anything like that before? Can I take the lens apart myself? I dismantled a Canon Serenar f/1.8, so it wouldn't be my first rodeo. Thanks!

Yep, Had the same thing in mine..Its lose paint or something like that, I believe the inside of the lens needs to be repainted.. I had my done CLA in all for oh I think $150 maybe..

I've bought a number Summars, Summitars, Summicrons with small problems like this. Typically they are easy fixes. The lenses are simple to disassemble, repair and reassemble.

The only time I had a problem was when I bought a fraknesteined Cron, but was able to buy another lens of proper vintage that had a bad front element and ended up with a perfect working example.

The potential separation was the first thing I saw.

I think Joe is talking about the black blob in the lower left quadrant of the picture. That looks like loose paint or other internal coating.

At least with the Summitar the lens head screws off and anything loose between elements is easy to clean.
