...do i really need a 100/2 lens when i'm quite happy with the 85/2?

i was thinking about the 100 framelines in the p, but i'm guessing that i could easily live with them for the 85.

with the money for a 100/2 i could really invest in my canon 35 collection.
i use 35 more than 85/100.

i enjoy the 35 more etc.

throw your ideas at me please!
i need to know if i'm missing something or not considering something here.

Well Joe,

If you were a collector, you would HAVE TO HAVE the 100mm F2. The 85mm F2 should fulfill all of your short Telephoto requirements, and the 135mm will make up for longer lengths. There is not enough difference from 85mm to 100mm to justify spending $300~$400. But then, how does a user justify investing in a 35mm collection? If you want to spend the money as a user, get a Canon 28mm. As a Collector, get the 100mm F2 or 35mm F1.5.

If you mostly shoot b&w (or scan your films) and don't mind cropping them to get the final composition you want, then there's no reason you shouldn't stick with the 85 and use the 100 frameline with it.

The fields of view aren't all THAT different, as a quick glance through a Canon 7 finder will show.

In other words, shooting an 85mm lens with a 100mm finder will leave all your images pretty "loose." As long as that doesn't bother you, go with it!

What is the difference between 85mm and 100mm in the real world? Maybe 1/2 step forward with the 85mm to equal a 100mm?

I tend to use my 85mm much more than my 100mm, but that is just me. (they are also NNNNNNiiiiiiKKKKooooNNNs, not Canons).

the difference between the viewing angle of a 85 and a 100 is very very small, if you really need that extra 15mm you can just crop the edge of the neg/print, you will lose no quality in practice. If there's no other difference between the two lenses (i don't know any of them personally), I would go for only one of them.
As to framelines, i agree with you, framing with a rf is not that accurate anyway.

I have the Nikkor in 8.5cm f2 and 10.5cm F2.5. But Canon did not make a 105mm. If they had, that would have been different. like 5 different...

BUT Joe, You have the 100mm F4. The real difference in it is the weight. Want to travel light, grab the 100mm F4. Need Speed, grab the 85mm f2.

i think i have the soul of a collector but not the budget of one.

i just might be able to satisfy the collector need by focussing on one focal length and not looking at ALL of the canon catalouge.

so maybe it's 35's for me.

Yes,

stick with the 85/2, I'm going to do that using the J9 on the P with the 100 lines, the threads on the 7 lens mount are a bit damaged and that lens doesn't screw smoothly, while the Voigtlander 35 does it like butter.

IMO, it's always interesting to have some extra frame in the final image, many times I've found pleasant to include those 'surprises' in the final picture.

On the other hand, Joe... if you get yourself that 100/2, you might figure out which one you like more and get rid of the other one without any loss, i guess that's an option too! Unless you know you won't be able to sell it (and i don't mean lack of buyers hehe)

But I put the 10.5cm f2.5 Nikkor on the M3. I repaired the threads, and it was just easier to use on the M adapter. But I did try it out on the Canon.

so, i bid on the 100/2 that just ended (the auction that is) and lost by 5 bucks in the last 10 seconds or so.

i needed to.

i had more cash to bid but found myself thinking that i really didn't need/want this lens.
at least not right now.
i'm happy and will stay with the 85/2.
i think i have found my kit. the combo that will work for me.

i ordered another m-grip just now for the other p.

i start shooting, in earnest, soon.
