Perfect example as to why it's dangerous to make decisions based on anecdotal evidence (talk about small sample sizes!). Many people who use Hasselblad V's have had shutter jams, and most people would have serviced the lens shutters at least a few times over a 35 year life. So, yes, even mechanical cameras require service.

So everything has been a problem for 17 years with Nikon? No decent images? So tell me, why have you stayed with them for 17 years? Please, switch to Canon, or some other brand, and troll elsewhere.
 
I've thought about vuscan since my Mac stopped playing nicely with my V700 after one of Apple's OS updates. When batch scanning it stalls after each scan and has to be manually prompted to scan the next negative.

My V600 was doing the same thing and needed an update from Epson

In all seriousness, though, it's not all that expensive. Leica Camera AG in Switzerland does the "official" service for Hasselblad if I recall and their prices are indeed astronomical. But you can find other repair technicians with more reasonable prices. Tell him to look up a guy by the name of Claudio Fabio in Zurich. If that's still too expensive there are technicians in Germany that will do it for cheaper.

there's an update from Epson ... but it's kind of hard to find. Google should help.
sorry - I'm on my mobile so can't look for it.
 
Are there other scanner software producers out there that I could use instead of Vuescan.
I have my Nikon 3.12 software CD but it will not load onto my newer 64 bit computer.

I'll try again. The following thread shows how to install/run the Nikon software on Win 7/8/10 64-bit. Pay particular attention to the info on Win 10 driver signature enforcement. It's not rocket science.

Thank you Plummerl, I have taken the PC to Staples, the Wizz kid there is working on it and I will pass this info on tomorrow.
I have an old hard drive that had an old version of Vuescan on it from 2004, I plugged this into the PC and it opened up then fired up the Scanner and they both worked immediately. So the issue is about software downloading.
So I hope I am on the road to recovery.

My issue is why it worked last week and then yesterday it was back to the old issues.
I have avoided Nikon equipment since three of their cameras failed on me, a cooipix, 35TI and a D70. Now this scanner is becoming a pain.
If I go digital again it will be a back for my Hasselblads and or a Leica Digital rangefinder. I have an M6 and M3 that have not been used in years since I am a120 roll film user.

Great choice, that digital Leica. I've never read or heard about any issues that might irritate or annoy someone like you who complains about technology moving forward without them.
 
Have my Nikon Coolscan hooked up to a 2004 PowerMac G4 running NikonScan and Vuescan. Really like Vuescan for B&W work, and the point focus option. Use NikonScan for color work and in particular, color slides, and like the digital ICE option.

Vuescan works great, until it doesn't. Don't know why but every so often, in the middle of a batch scan of B&W negatives, it will just stop working. Real pain in the backside to trash preferences, un-install it, and then re-install it, but that seems to be the only thing that gets it back up and running again. Then it works great for a couple of months, and then suddenly stops working. It's a problem I live with, because I like the results I get with it.

To the OP, suggest you post in the "Nikon CoolScan Users" group on Facebook.

A couple of hardware repair pros there have been very helpful with things like what you are experiencing.

When you say "the company" do you mean Nikon or Vuescan?

I get the impression that Vuescan is a small shop and those businesses tend to listen to customers when something is wrong.

I remember a phone conversation with Ed Hamrick back in 2003 or 2004 about a real problem. He fixed the problem and it was included in a new release several days later.

But we digressed into the problems of customer service with a product that only sold for $40 back then. He had done everything possible so customers could solve problems themselves without using his time. But he said he was constantly responding to inquiries about:
* will Vuescan work with an XXX scanner? This was in spite of trying to get everyone to simply download the demo version and try it.
* the "How do I? Or, I can't." questions when the answer was in the instructions.
* people who wanted him to research problems but would not bother to download the latest version which commonly had solved the problem.
* people who wanted him to research problems but refused to enclose the vuescan.ini file which was key to everything.

I continue to be pleased that Vuescan has been a successful product in spite of a customer base containing some who expect private handholding for a product of such low cost.
