I have purchased a digital camera! It will arrive tomorrow and I will shoot and see how good this thing realy is. So much talk, so much praise. I need to see for myself.
My commitment to myself is that if I am not 100% satisfied within a week, I wil get an M7 with a 35 and a 90.
If I am happy with results, I will get a Contax G2.

Uh-oh I see a shootout coming on. Let me see, 700 members here. If everyone ponies up $10 that's $7000. That should be enough for you and I to meet in Hawaii for a week long shoot out, your digital vs. my G1.

Great commitment!!
Not happening. Im still a film guy and just wanted to see what the big hype about digital is all about. No slr can come close to a 35 APO summicron

jorge, i'm dancing on the dark side too...i just bought a mega-canon (heavy as a cannon) and it's definitly not as sweet and lovely as my m6. having said that, it saved me from looking like a fool this weekend in a shooting situation that went beyond film. i don't know if you do illustration or not, or if you ever need immediate visual reference for a project. i do both and the digi is invaluable for that. i've done a whole show w. images from an older digi.
besides, i priced an m7 (new) and it was a lot more expensive than this digi.
what did you get?
film is here to stay.

I use my wife's little 3mg P&S for Ebay sales or quick web shots. Does well for web stuff, but I'm a film fan to make decent prints. But, if someone "gave" me a D2H I could have fun playing ~ ; - )

Danced a little on the dark side myself. Went and got an SLR. An old Olympus OM-2. It should be here tomorrow. One of these I'll get a good DSLR but the quality wise films still seems better in the sub 500 price range. Is there anything in that range that's as good as say a used bessa with a VC lens on it, or an elan with a good prime. I'm asking seriously...
picked up a used eos 1ds and a 24-70 lens. I will post some temprary pictures soon and then remove them since this is RangeFinderForum

I must confess.... I've had a digital camera for a few years. It's only a 2MP Minolta Dimage X and I use for my ebay pix and as a notebook or use it alongside my film cameras.
It failed miserably when I took it out with my OM gear on Sunday to get some shots of the Rememberance Service. First battery lasted for 4 shots....the second abtery lasted for only 2 shots!.......despite being charged up the night before. Think they are past their best now hence I have ordered two new batteries.
Although only 2MP the quality is pretty good. I dislike the shutter lag..... a real PITA.....the viewfinder only shows about 70% of the image area so you really have to use the screen and as we know these can be difficult to see in bright sun.
I find it pretty good for low light/night shots....digital seems to give good exposures easier than film.
I have a number of film cameras and they all feel better in the hand than the digi. I have never picked up a digital camera, including DSLRs and loved the feel of it like a film camera.
I have a number of digital shots on my site at
www.fotolog.net/kuvvy
if anyone cares to have a look.

Jorge that's a very very nasty sin! As the punishment, send that 1Ds and 24-70 L to me to be burnt in the middle of Holy ground of Uluru!

Whoa, thats going out on a limb! A 1Ds....mmmm....that's nice.
I too shoot digital. I kinda went backwards. I started with a T70, then sold it and went to a Sony 707, then 717 and S85. Then a D100 and a 1D (currently own both), then to an EOS3 and now some old RF's.
Wife gave the thumbs up on a Bessa R....hmmm.....anyone selling?

David, how about trading your 1D with Bessa R2 + 50/1.5 + 35/2.5 + 75/2.5?

I still have my original pair of Olympus OM-1's. A great SLR series. Welcome to the Oly family!digitalox said:Danced a little on the dark side myself. Went and got an SLR. An old Olympus OM-2. Your question about sub-500 cams being 'as good as' a 35mm with a prime lens is not an easy question to answer. So much depends on what kind of film you're shooting and how it gets scanned. I carry around an older Canon S45 (4mpx) in my kit because it's small, has a sharp zoom lens and produces results that, up to 8x10, stand up well beside 35mm. I like the looks of the newer Canon S70 -- it has added the equivalent of 28mm wide in its zoom range and has a fairly clean 7mpx sensor. It's selling for around $499. Here's a full review:

Hi Gene, thanks. Well, I'm not exactly sure why I bought the Oly. It was an impulse buy on Ebay, I hope it works OK.
I guess as far as the digital goes I'm talking best case - I usually shoot B&W, scan from 800 to 2400 dpi. For 500 I could get an Elan 7NE and lens. Not a great lens, but a lens.
I have an olympus 3.2 mp digital here too. Got it a christmas or two ago. It was just enough to rekindle my interest in photography! OK cam but qualityand creative control lacking, and of course shutter lag.
Now, I usually only use it to make pics for Ebay. I think if I was going with the canon i'd pay just a little bit more and go with the G6 - i like it.

I've had a digital camera for several years. Hate the thing. Every time I need to use it (which is not very often TG) I have to crack open the manual to figure out how to use it.

Don't worry about it! I actually sorta started with digital, with a Sony FD7 (floppy disks, anyone?), unless you count P&S and 110 film cameras, then I've used those way before. Then got a P9, F717. Played with my friend's D30, and went hey, DSLRs ROCK! So I got a film body, a dynax 5 to play with negs. Ho hum. Then one day I shot slides. Whoa. Couldn't be bothered with DSLRs anymore. Then I got into classic rangefinders 'cause they are so cool. Double whoa. SLRs? No thanks...
Word. Digital can't replace slides with rangefinders. Amen. Digicams are now relegated to a) Web duties and b) events that I will just shoot shoot shoot shoot with no regard to quality, only quantity. Evil!

Ever buddy here knows I am 'bicameral'!!!
I love my Canon FD-mount SLRs and now I have discovered the sweet, sweet world of the M42-mount Super Multi Taks on various M42-bodied cameras such as the Vivitar SL/400, Bessaflex, and Fujica ST's.
Yes, I have an ongoing love affair with rangefinders as well.
And when I can afford it, I plan to get a Canon Digital Rebel with an M42 adapter to use my classic Tak primes with.
Gasp!
How will I tell the folks? How will I ever show my face around here again?
Best Regards,
Bill Mattocks

Both film AND digital cameras are capable of producing excellent photographs. There's no need to diss one or the other. Love my RF's, love my SLR's, love my TLR, love my digitals. It's all photography!
