. . . and it, er, appears to be working just fine. Do these things have longevity issues related to the selenium cell or anything? It certainly makes using the M3 faster and more intuitive.

I have not seen any selenium cell equipped meter in the recent times that worked reasonable well over the whole range so congrats on your purchase !
The selenium cell indeed can deteriorate with time, mostly due to moisture and excessive exposure to light.
I have and use the newer MR-4, works with a CdS cell and batteries, and I agree, it makes the work flow faster.

Yeah that's the thing I'm worried about it's just the cat's pajamas for shooting, but I have to admit I haven't tested it systematically over the entire range it's designed to cover (much less sourced one of the booster cells and tried that out too.) Working MRs seem to be rawther more expensive.

I have an MR which works great, but of course is not based on a CdS cell.
If you are unsure of it, you might send it to Quality Light Metrics (George Milton), who can tell you if it's working in spec, and if not, if it can be saved. He does initial evaluation for free.

George told me a few weeks ago he was out of parts to repair MCs, but MRs are still ok...
