I just had an attempted robbery

glad you arer OK, larky.
i keep a winchester model 12 pump, short barrel, 12 gauge - in-house. no will hear it being racked; any bad guys may assume the safety is off, too ...

Si Senor,

My philosophy has always been, if you're close enough to hear it being racked, you've already entered into another clause in the social contract

A have a Fijian traditional weapon at home, a rib opener (middle)

Better than a baseball bat I think :)

There must be hundreds of references on this forum to using cameras as weapons (usually Leicas or Nikon F's) against muggers, theives etc, bashing heads in, etc. If I have to read another one I think I'll puke. Personally, I feel a lot safer without weapons in the house.

I keep a Mamiya RB67 with handgrip and a Nikon F4s next to my bed (both loaded!) :D

I live in a big city. Right downtown. I have a cell phone. It works fine. There's a camera in the phone "click" a photograph... "send" and the image is now ready for police viewing along with GPS coords...

They can have my stuff after that, if they want to stick around and wait for the police. I don't feel like a couple of years in court defending myself if someone is shot and killed. I have better stuff to do.

I grew up in a country where gun's are not common. I was always amazed with the American's I worked with and there fascination with gun's. Then I moved to the Philippines :) My other hobby is IPSC (PPSA) style shooting, a great stress reliever and a skill with practical advantages where it is considered acceptable to shoot an attacker.

Tru dat fo' real fo' real.

Of course if you don't live "downtown" but in a part of town where violent crime is incredibly common:
The idea is to have a weapon for the instances when not having one may render you unable to even appear in court at a later date. :)

Academic really though.

Mine is decorative really :)
It does look scary though!
Luckily I live in the quietest neighbourhood I can imagine, not sure what I'd actually do if sth like that happened. I have an alarm, I hope it's enough.

Excellent. I shoot IDPA myself. Absolutely love it.
But as much as I love firearms, I would never recommend one for someone who won't take the time to learn how to use it - both safely and effectively.
I just pray that I never have to use one in self defense. Yet at the same time, I don't want to be the guy who has to reach for a baseball bat or kitchen knife if someone decides to break into my home to attack me or my wife.

Im not one to condone violence or weapons, but if someone forcibly breaks into your house then I have no problems with someone protecting themselves. Maybe growing up in Los Angeles, and hearing about all the gangs and knowing of some really tragic break-ins in my area that resulted in the needless deaths of families/couples etc... sometimes, they want more than just your stuff.

That being said, i dont have any weapons other than 7 tennis rackets, 2 leicas, my old metal crutches and a snowboard. Not sure what id use, probably two tennis rackets, both titanium

Sadly in the UK we are limited on weapons we can keep for break ins. At the moment I have only m right arm, which after being shattered by a Volvo estate is like a lump hammer. I'm a small guy, but with no feeling you'll be surprised how hard you can hit.

However, I am about to start Wing Chun.

A friend of mine, this is going back about 10 years now, got broken into whilst he was asleep. He was dosing on his couch, in a room he was redecorating. He woke up, was obviously shocked, and without thinking picked up a brick and took the guys jaw off. That took about 3 years to sort out legally, he was never charged but it took a while to go away. He placed that brick at a specific point in the wall and framed it!

Living in a country where you have less rights then the burglar, I should help the guy carry out the heavy stuff like a TV :(

I know that if someone threatens me or my family by breaking into MY house and I'm around at the time. I'm sure he'll leave, feet or head first...his choice.

Nice English understatement. In the UK we are stuffed basically! The onus is on the one who is broken into or offended against to make certain we don't infringe the perp's human rights (Oh, God forbid that) The police are next to useless and can offer a thousand and one reasons for that e.g's. too much paper work; not ehough feet on the beat; not enough chance of conviction; the perp had a hard upbringing....

Do NOT get me started on this one in my own country!!

Time to breathe out gently...

_larky: Glad your fine matey.

I was approached by a teen boy the other day while walking with my son. He surprised me from behind and started asking about the camera I was carrying, FM3a. I talked to him a little, had no choice in the situation, my bias, but I assumed the worst. I got between him and my son and gently gripped the prism and lens of the camera with full intent to apply the baseplate to his temple if I had to.

Terrible world we live in today that I would even think that. He was just asking about the camera, popped his earbuds back in and went on his way. My bad I guess. But you never know.

The forensics department arrived, looked at the door with what must be magic eyes, and said there was nothing they could see. There was me thinking they needed to apply grease or powder or something, oh no, they had the new magic eyes.

If I see the guy again, and he's with friends, I'll probably just ask him why he left so quickly and didn't leave a number, act as camp as I can, and wander off. :D

Wow...glad you were there and ran him off! Hope you reported the incident to the local authorities. Chances are, he will be back, and they need to know about it.

Do you have the option for a security system? Now may be the time.
