Better the guy ran off-- though we have a new law now "castle law" , I think it means you can take him down to the darkroom and waterboard him in the print washer.
Regards, John
I should think development in fresh pyro, a proper stop bath, "fix" and thorough wash and dry, then firm contact printing might be effective.

That took about 3 years to sort out legally, he was never charged but it took a while to go away. He placed that brick at a specific point in the wall and framed it!
That is a sad fact of life. We used to have a saying something to the effect, "I would rather be tried by 12 that carried by six." That is 12 jurors rather than 6 pall bearers.
But certainly one must make quick decisions in many cases, that may be debated by lawyers and courts for a long time in comfortable surroundings. On the street if one seems to have the option of safe retreat, that is probably the best option. In a home, there are other considerations, like family members to protect, or doors or windows that may not allow safe retreat.
I have some skills to protect myself, but I would prefer not to use them. In the case of the OP, he was confronted by a person breaking into his house. It so far has turned out well for him. That is to be thankful for.

Living in a country where you have less rights then the burglar, I should help the guy carry out the heavy stuff like a TV![]()
Alas, It seems to be the same for most of EU. I live in Spain and many people complain about our law.
Don't ever think of shooting a burglar because you might be jailed more time than him.
Teenagers can do a severe crime but the punishment is very light or none at all. In fact, a 13 year old kid in my town abused a pair of 10 year olds and NOTHING has happened! If a minor can do crimes like an adult, he should receive the same punishment.
The world is going nuts!

Wow seriously, you're a weapon collector or something? Those look lethal and very painful indeed.

Home-invasion seems to be on the rise here in the Netherlands unfortunately. Now that shops and companies enjoy better security and protection, the bad guys are picking on easier targets. Not a week goes by without me hearing about some elderly couple that was beaten up in their own home. Never fails to make me angry
I got this in the gun locker at home. I'm just not allowed to use it on burglars

Now that's a beautiful M1911.
I'd take that over a Black paint M4 any day of the week.

A friend of mine, this is going back about 10 years now, got broken into whilst he was asleep. He was dosing on his couch, in a room he was redecorating. He woke up, was obviously shocked, and without thinking picked up a brick and took the guys jaw off. That took about 3 years to sort out legally, he was never charged but it took a while to go away. He placed that brick at a specific point in the wall and framed it!
This is such a disturbing story. How can you have a system that doesn't allow you to defend yourself in your own home?

Sorry to hear that... The guy was probably not a good thief since he was using the front door... Or who knows if he was a thief unless captured and interrogated.
I wonder why we root for and admire thieves and robbers in a heist movie while wanting to kill real life thieves with Samurai swords and bazookas... Talk of a schizophrenic culture where at one hand outlaws are celebrated and on the other hand everyone carries a weapon in order to kill them... its funny actually.

In the most simplistic sense, who would disagree with defending yourself in your own home? Only the most radical pacifist. The problem is that real life is not so simple. Most unlawful entries aren't kill-or-be-killed home invasions. Statistically they are almost non-existent (not that the statistics are comforting if it happens to you, of course). What's a lot more common is a quick smash of a window, or poke in through and unlocked door, and someone grabs a purse or a laptop or something and takes off.
It's really, really hard for most people to think that there is equity in a dumb 16-year-old kid, or an addled 30-year-old crackhead, or a drunk or mentally ill person who doesn't even realize what they're doing, to have their skull shattered by a twelve gauge based only on the fact that they crossed your threshold. This stuff happens all the time, so the system does have to closely examine these instances and decide if it was *really* self-defense or if someone shot first and asked questions later. Hell, there are even instance where people shot someone who was poking around their front gate on the street and then dragged them inside to claim the "castle" defense.
It's not nearly so simple as people want it to be, like everything in the real world.
(For the record, I've lived through not only burglaries and robberies, but a period of keeping a handgun on top of the fridge until we were able to move because we were being specifically targeted by a neighbor with a firearm. So I'm not unsympathetic. But nobody, imo, has the right to be judge, jury, and executioner unless there is clearly an immediate threat to their safety. Once you go down that road, it's not long before someone is going to find a "good" reason to cap your ass.)

Back about a year ago a burglar broke into an old guy's house here in the UK - turns out he was an ex-army boxing champ and beat the burglar to a pulp. I love it!!
I think a rib opener may just be deemed as excessie force here in the uk, and guns are for wimps

Hello everyone.
I'm in London, UK. Herne Hill, it's a nice suburban street. We've since had better locks put on, tomorrow I'm fitting even more security.
The law in the UK is a bit poor to be honest, but a lot of judges are siding with the home wonders in cases that go to court. To be honest, if he'd not have got away, he'd be in bad shape now. Like I say, I'm not a big guy, but I'm very capable of removing your ability to function.
It's actually been a great experience, it lets you face up to who you are and how to deal with situation. I felt I did well. But, just in case, I've booked myself in to some martial arts courses, Wing Chun.
I'm also going to keep an old Zenith around as a weapon

Is it a digital pistol or does it take film?

Ride, dive, shoot.
I'm sure M1911 would do a fine job, but I still think a swing of Leica M on strap to thief's head would be as lethal as .45 ACP in close-range combat.

I agree completely - at least on that part of your post. I suspect, however, that we'd disagree on what constitutes and immediate threat. Personally, I cannot think of many threats more immediate than someone invading your home.
This is why I support the so-called castle doctrine. It puts the burden on the invader, rather than the person whose home has been invaded.

A neighbor has got a big german Shepherd dog. One day he took the dog with him, which is unusual, and that evening his house got broken into.
The guy just jumped to a balcony in the back of his house that lies to a dark street, a weak part of the house.

I keep my cameras in a locked safe for fear they will go the way of my previous firearms.
I no longer have any in my place of residence. It all started when I started with what seemed like some innocent mixed up feelings of being touched in the middle of the night. It was no long after that when the particular perpetrator began to touch me while I was awake and shortly it turned aggressive. I had not made any distinct decisions even though I was frustrated. When I did it had come to a point when that one firearm had influenced all the rest of them in my place of residence to push me around to get their way as well. The humiliation became too much on top of never feeling safe at home. It was not easy but I managed to get rid of them all to some gun nut they probably believed would clean and oil them more often. Since then I have felt safer at home but I occasionally have a relapse like when I forget to take something metal off my bed so I roll around and feel cold steel in the middle of the night.
