...but we have some great photographers here as well!

i just want to take a moment and say that i cannot help but be impressed with the level of quality images that appear here on rff on a daily basis.

You are so right, Joe. We have fabulous photographers. It's such a delight to see people post and then go to their blog or flickr account and see amazing photos!

Joe, we tend to be "gear centric" - but at least we also use the stuff we have. Some of the other Forums seems to be pre-occupied with mint or still boxed stuff!!!!
Have a great holiday and hope that it is not too cold for pictures! Vancouver is, as per usual, in December - f2.8 and 1/60 with TriX!!!!! Cant wait for brighter days - still have some 12 iso ND 21 ORWO to shoot - and lots of Tech Pan.
All the best,
Tom

A big +1 from here. This place is one of the best "photo magazines" around!

Joe, spend some time in the galleries or in the words/no words threads. Those places will remind you that for many of us it's not always only about the gear. Plenty of images on the site that speak for themselves without gear fondling. And, yes, there is some amazingly inspiring work to be seen here.

The problem is is that conversation about images beyond the realm of technical nicety, which works fine one-on-one with another person interested in photographic works as art, often begins to sound somewhat pretentious when speaking to a larger group of folks with more mixed interests.

That seeming pretentiousness, unintentional tho it might be, is usually enough to stop useful dialogue.

not trying to make folks feel guilty about it...i just wanted to celebrate the other half of what we are.
as for me appreciating the images posted here...i do! that's what led me to remarking about it in the first place.

That very much depends on what you are used to... Before I discovered and entered RFF, I was on another forum (which I still read sometimes). Here I was instantly excited by the small amount of gear talk and the much greater emphasis on photography.

One is annoyed sometimes by the gear talk here, I recommend looking over the fence and read others forums for, let's say, an hour.

And yes, plenty of really good images around here, and many useful insights about photography, not the gear and technical aspects, but what photography is, about the images and visions and photographers. It's a good and almost well balanced mix.

Joe, totally off topic (or, maybe it isn't).

I have still not recovered from seeing this as new the signature on your posts:

"x-pro1/x-e1...18...35...18-55...rx100"

How are you enjoying that combo AND can you please post some of your pictures from it???

rob, i've been posting images in the fuji image threads here on rff.
i'm liking the new kits...getting used to them is challenging for me.

I am one who quietly visits and enjoys the photo galleries here, and it is a great pleasure. Also visiting personal websites (shown in signatures) is just great, but too often kind of discouraging :D seeing the wonderful stuff people here have created (will I ever get there? . . . probably not in this lifetime !)

The postings are gear oriented, okay, that's a good topic to talk over. I just think that we enjoy admiring pictures by ourselves, you know.

See what I just learned. A whole treasure trove of images from X100s. Some really nice work by some members I'm familiar with and few I am not. Joe you posted some lovely X100 portraits back in August. No wonder you like the kit. I need to spend more time on less familiar (to me) parts of the site. Apparently, I don't get around enough. Thanks for stimulating my curiosity. I wonder what other goodies I've been missing?
Silly me. I'll visit there. Thanks. Glad you're liking them.

I think it is just so much easier to comment on gear rather then photographs , and i agree there is lot of good stuff in galleries here showing up every now and then.

Although I write for a living, I realized that sometimes I lack for words to comment on images that I see. So, I've taken to simply clicking "favorite" on many of the ones in the gallery that touch me. And, each week the I have the time, that number of those I click is often quite large. I hope the people whose images I "favorite" realize that my click is every bit as much a compliment as if I'd written something. And, let's face it, with the volume of images we see, it is sometimes difficult to avoid saying something trite or redundant even when we mean to offer high compliments.

I agree. People have different tastes in photography but we are united in our appreciation of the RF.
