I love my Nikon F2

I just sold my F2 with DE-1 it brought $700. Great camera I just didn't seem to use it a whole lot because of the hassle of developing film around here and I never learned to do it myself plus I do not have a scanner. I have another F2 Photomic so I am not without.

I love the F2. I can't afford an MP so I settled for the F2.

Owning a Titan would be deluxe.

This thread inspired me to put my F2 Photomic back in the bag. No complaints for the DP-12 prism, and I'm amazed that the light meter works in a camera older than I am. I love the sound of the F2's shutter and mirror slap; it sounds so unlike a modern camera that I'm always surprised to get those perfectly exposed negs back.

Dave,

I'm a big fan of Nikon F3's, but I have to say I'm very fond of Nikon F2's, and to me it is just a sexy camera. Back in the 70's my first camera was a F2A, I owned F2AS's which have the best metering for night shooting, and owned both a black and a chrome F2's with DE-1 prisms.

If you ever get a DE-1 prism know that you can take a F3 K screen and fit it into a F2 screen frame for a brighter screen. I wouldn't recommend doing this with any metered prism because the added brightness will cause an offset on your metering.

Ahhh...good to know, Cal! But lately, I have found that I really prefer a meter! Gasp! I am getting too much stress these days to think when I am shooting so it was a wonderful moment when I got the meter working perfectly!

I reckon I will have to get used to the aesthetics and I admit, it is growing on me....even got a yellow filter for the 50mm lens.

Now, I can use the camera with the added secure feeling that my exposures will be good. Still have to get my exposed rolls developed and scanned at Precision Camera so I will be sending out an order once a month. No more local lab screw-ups for me.

F2s are great cameras. I bought my first one in 1990 and have owned around 10 over the years. I am down to 2 now - one with a DE-1 and the other with a DP-3. It's my favourite Nikon film camera - in my view it beats the F, F3, F4, F5 and F6. Pure mechanical excellence in a more refined package than the original F.

Ah, the titan. I sold mine a few months ago, swearing not to go looking for another one.

Reason to sell - too much money tied up in it.

Okay, you made me look. And, watch out for fakes. See Sover Wong's page for how to spot a fake.

Nikon F2s are superb cameras, but I'm more emotionally attached to the Nikon F. The Nikon F Photomic FTn was my first SLR camera, got it in 1969. I loved that camera too.

Over the years I had it, the F2, the F3, the FM/FM2/FM2n and FE2, and I have to admit that I *used* the FM series bodies much more, but I still love the original F.

Got another F Photomic FTn—in black, my long-ago fantasy—a year and some ago. Dirt cheap, great condition. Picked up the plain prism finder for it, a little pricey but eh?... Love it, sadly don't use it so much. I've shot three rolls with it, the fourth has been in it for a year...

Maybe I'll take it out for a walk this weekend. 🙂

Those first cameras carry a lot of sentiment. I understand.

Must be why I am so attached to the FM/FE compact bodies...like a good pair of old blue jeans. The F2 with a DE-1 prism would be amazing to me. Chrome of course, to match the chrome body...and then Luigi has some beautiful photos of chrome F2s with the DE-1 prism al dressed up to go in those amazing cases!😱

Cal, I have used the F3 "B" screens on the F2 (after filing off that ledge) and had no issues with metering.

Dave--what did you do to the F2's meter that cured the jumpiness?
I'd love to know--got one jumping around myself...🙂
Thanks!
Paul

Your meter probably has a bad ring resistor. I sent mine to CameraQuest. It came back as good as new - the loose and cracked eyepiece had even been replaced. I highly recommend CameraQuest!

Truly, a superb camera. Many of the images taken with it 30 years ago have just gone into a little book and I loved that camera.

I bought mine in 1973 with the DE-1 finder ( chrome ) . 2 years later I changed my DE-1 for a metered finder and turned it in a F2S , as I was tired of lugging around a Lunasix 3 . I always regretted this , and have been looking for a DE-1 , but gave it up now , too hard to find in mint condition . I called the importer once ( eighties ) and he had the 2 last ones new for 225 € each . Couldn't afford that at the time .

Few years later I bought one of the last new motordrives for it ( MD-2 _ MB-1 ) for a very reduced price . I felt I could use longer shutterspeeds with it because of the electronic shutter-release and the ergonomics , I put my arm against my chest and supported the camera under the battery-compartment .

Still have this camera , as it was a gift from my parents . Don't use it much though .

Ups I did it again. Yesterday I ordered another F2 (AS). I'm so weak with very low resistance. How far will this go? When will it end?
Greetings from rainy Austria: Dieter

I much prefer a Leicaflex SL, but I've used an F2, respect it, and think it's a nice camera, which is something I can't say for all manual and mechanical cameras (e.g., Contarex Bullseye).
