I met Koudelka...

I had beer later after the "vernissage" of his exhibition... It was a wonderful time. I went there downstairs during the press conference (I'm taking photos for work with a crappy Nikon Coolpix 4500... but I also had my Kiev-2A with a 50/1.5 Jupiter-3 'round the neck!)... some of the photographers were smiling and winking at me, esp. the old ones using Nikon FM2 and derivates... When the exhibition was formally opened the place became stuffed full with people and most of them were heading towards Josef Koudelka to greet him or have books or posters signed. It was really great and he was sometimes hugging some of the folks. He was offered, by I don't know who, a BIG czech salam (saucisson) and a bottle of plum alcohol (slivovice, homemade, probably). I noticed an unusually high presence of rangefinders in the crowd (M6 TTL, Leica III with 20/5.6 russar, summicron & other stuff, a Panasonic Lumix (the one who looks like an RF), and some other "regular" SLR gear (lots of Nikon FM old models) plus the regular crowd of professional DSLR shooters, and many folks with compact cameras. It was really, really great and I shot a roll of TX400 of Koudelka 😉

I had the chance to shake his hand and chat with him for a few seconds, but he was then waving to people and handling them the slivovice bottle, it was really a great, cheerful moment! Some photos will follow...

Cheers!
Max

Ok some photos.... (black & white will follow up sometime soon if they are OK, I need to get fresh D76 😀)

Did I mention it was so crazily warm in there? As soon as his name was pronounced the crowd (me included) bursted into clapping hands for a long moment)... and he's really a simple, cheerful person! My boss (who knows him well) told me : "go talk to him, he's a nice person" 🙂 I was a bit shy but I had the occasion. I told him to come to my photo exhibition, but he told me he's flying back somewhere else tomorrow morning, but he did gently "punch" my right breast saying "good luck boy!" 😉

ahhh ... but the big question is what was Josef wearing around his neck ??? 😀

Congrats Max, that must have been a wonderful experience!

I'm slowly sobering up after my dinner, which is a good thing (had a 14° Bernard "special" unpasteurized beer, then a normal 10° Bernard unpasteurized beer, then a small 10° beer of the same kind) ... 1,3 liter total... ! But I didn't drink from Koudelka's slivovice 😉

Ah I remember waving at him and shouting "bye by Mr. Koudelka!" he waved at me and said "ciao ciao, bye!" it's nothing and he won't remember me probably, but it was fun for sure, it was a great time, everything but formal, which is good when it takes place in the generally formal and boring frame of the french cultural centers abroad (and probably the best thing of all was that the ambassador was late and didn't come due to a political appointment) 😉

*jealousy* 😀

sounds brilliant. I'll have to keep my ear to the ground in the future, even if it means travelling 🙂

Max,
That sounds really great. It is always special to meet someone you really admire. Kodelka is one of my favorite photographers.
Last week I also had the opportunity to spend time with another Magnum legend, Marc Riboud. He is an old friend of my wife's family and we were invited to a small gathering for him here in NYC.
I took my M5 with me and here are a couple of images. He had several prints- all beautiful, classic images- out on a large table for people to look at.
I have more images of the visit on my flickr site.
