I met Koudelka...

Max, thanks for your comments. I didn't mean to 'hijack' your post with my story.
I was relunctant to take my camera (a Leica, to an event for someone who was brought into Magnum by Cartier Bresson..) to the party, however I thought, what would Marc do? Of course he would have a camera, and in the end I was glad I did. An interesting part of our conversation was about the equipment he used during his long career and if he ever tried digital. He likes using simple point and shoot cameras for walking around, which is amusing.

What a wonderful opportunity! I've long been inspired by the work of Josef Koudelka, as well as that of another great Czech photographer, Josef Sudek.

Many years ago I went to an opening of an exhibition of photomicrographs by Roman Vishniac, who had decades earlier recorded life in the Warsaw ghetto, a precious record of a vanished time and place. Vishniac seemed to me a delightful, impish man whose energy might well explain his mastery of such diverse types of photography. He was another inspiration, indeed.

Happy Velvet Revolution Day!

*giggles* thank you! I feel lucky to have my exhibition opening one day after Koudelka's one, and to hold the exhibition in the building opposite to Sudek's old atelier... 😀 This makes me feel both humbled and encouraged! 🙂

Hi Pete, I don't remember well of the speach because I was focused on taking photos for myself & for work, and he was speaking in czech, quite fast, however it was a short speach, maybe 5 minutes long 🙂

Max, Great story, and thanks for the pictures! It's pretty cool to meet photographers whose work you admire (I've met a few during book signings). In your pictures I notice that he is signing a book. What is the book?

.

Max,
I know nothing about this man or his work, but your obvious pleasure at meeting him will ensure that I will now find out as much as I can.
Brian.

Hi Ray, it's a book which has for title KOUDELKA and It's pretty huge, i think it's a kind of retrospective book of photos, some of them are on sale at the library in the basement of our building. There were other books of him exposed, the most striking to me being one about the mines in the north of the Czech Republic, a work done in 1994 called "The Black Triangle" ... I don't have enough words for it, it must simply be seen.
